About Walnut Fish Bar
Walnut Fish Bar is a fish and chips takeaway on Millans Park in Ambleside, serving battered haggis and battered black pudding in thick sausage shapes for anyone who wants something other than fish. Haddock and chips is the main order, with mushy peas on the side and a lemon wedge alongside the fish. Sausage and chips and chips with cheese and gravy are also on the counter, and curry sauce and gravy come in cartons or pots. Customers who stay can eat inside, where tables are spaced across the room and each one is set with salt, vinegar and pots of sauces. The fish is cooked to order when the shop is busy, and a queue can reach out the door on race days. The shop is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
The complaints are as frequent as the praise. Several call the fish and chips overpriced for the portion, with one saying the fish was smaller than a small portion elsewhere and another saying chips, cheese and gravy looked like a quarter of a box. Others found the haddock dry and tasteless, the batter thick and greasy, and the chips chewy or stale. One reviewer says a small chips order came out large and was charged extra, and a missing tub of peas had to be collected by returning to the shop.

“Visited Walnut Chippy on Saturday of the Lakeland races. It was very busy with a queue go8ng out the door. The staff coped amazingly well. The service was excellent and staff were polite. The guys were cooking on order as it was that busy. There was a bit of a wait, but it was so worth it. My food ( fish and chips) were cooked really well and were absolutely delicious. No complaints. I took my food away but you can sit in to eat too.”

“Absolute rip-off. - 1 fish, chip & peas, 1 fish and peas one small chips = over £35 at this place. - fish felt like it had been sitting for ages with a hard baked battered side, peas ok. Forgot the peas on the other order, had to return to the shop and got a small tub, half the size of the other portion. Small chips turned out to be large chips which they charged us extra for. - Chips were insipid and felt stale. - had the food been good it would still have been at least £10-£12 overpriced. And don’t tell me it’s the way the lakes is, we live here and have never paid anywhere near this amount. Don’t do it!”

“Nice place and nice people but sadly quality of the fish and chips was not very good. It was Haddock only when we were there and it was quite dry and tasteless and the batter was a bit thick and greasy. Chips were a little on the chewy side too.”

“Not sure what all these low-star reviews are about; portion size was huge, quality was excellent, service was brilliant.”

“One of the best fish and chips I've had in a long time! The fish batter was light and crispy, the fish itself was cooked perfectly and tasted very fresh. The chips were very light and crispy, held their form perfectly weren't too oily at all and again the mushy peas were top notch! Something that a lot of places fall short on these days even got the fish served with a lemon wedge. Top place”
