About Axe & Cleaver Inn
On Sutton Rd in Alford, Axe & Cleaver Inn is a family-run village pub and restaurant that serves dogs as well as their owners, with home-cooked dog dinners, including a roast. The human menu runs from steaks and a large mixed grill to vegetarian and vegan dishes such as a nut roast, and gluten-free options are available for coeliacs. At the bar, the ales and ciders include Hawkstone beer. An electric log fire sits inside the pub, and a private dining room gives groups a space of their own. The kitchen is small, so food can take time when the pub is busy. Parking is on site, with motorhome stopovers for Brit Stops users.

Customer Review Summary
Dogs' dinners come up most often, with reviewers describing home cooked roast dinners their dogs loved, which lets whole families eat out together. Close behind is the large mixed grill, called one of the best a reviewer had eaten and big enough to feed a small family. Others name the surf and turf, 16oz gammon, bbq ribs and Hunters chicken. Vegetarians and vegans praise the nut roast and a vegan stack burger, and a coeliac diner found the gluten-free choices outstanding. Several call the portions fantastic and the value reasonable, and the ales, ciders and a pint of Madri get mentions too. The main complaint is one reviewer's hour-long wait for a huge menu, with a salad that looked sad, though the fish pie was tasty. That reviewer suggests offering less and doing it well. Another notes the pub looks a bit tired. Bar staff are repeatedly called friendly, and one server remembered every drink and the separately ordered dips.

“We have just attended the axe&cleaver on the off chance as my Mrs is coeliac and this was a recommendation. We were absolutely blown away, the price and menu selection for both ‘normal’ visitors and those with gluten allergies was outstanding, the landlady was also fantastic with our 2 year old. The portions were fantastic and tasted equally as good. An absolute hidden gem that we will be revisiting before we head home.”

“We discovered the Axe by accident & were very happy we did. Dog friendly & the menu was extensive & very reasonable. We returned for our last meal of the holiday. Murphy had the amazing dogs dinner.”

“What an absolute delight! Lovely people cook food they love for a really good price. You'll love it too, buttery mash, perfect veg, delicious gravy before we even mention the mains. Plus they do home cooked doggy dinners as well. I will be back next time I'm on holiday.”

“We travel a lot, so we’ve eaten at countless pubs and restaurants across the UK. Honestly, it’s very rare to find a place with such delicious food and such an extensive menu. Everything we ordered was full of flavour, freshly prepared, and beautifully presented. We had a wonderful stay at Axe & Cleaver in Alford. The location is peaceful, well-maintained, and perfect for a relaxing stopover in a motorhome. The staff were incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. We were also delighted to find that they serve Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone beer, which was a fantastic bonus and well worth trying! This is exactly the kind of traditional British pub you hope to discover when travelling – full of character, outstanding food, excellent service, and a warm, friendly atmosphere. A huge thank you for your hospitality. We would happily stay here again and highly recommend Axe & Cleaver to anyone using Brit Stops. A real gem! From Julia”

Highlights
“The Axe & Cleaver, Huttoft is a family run village pub. We cater to both locals and tourists alike, serving a range of lagers, ales and ciders. We have an excellent reputation for the quality of our food, and have recently revamped our menu to include a wide range of steaks, traditional pub fayre and an impressive vegan range. Please be aware that we do get very busy, our kitchen is only small, and can sometimes lead to delays in food delivery.”
