Customer Review Summary
The Cheeseburger Royale comes up repeatedly as a standout, with diners calling it done to perfection and cooked exactly as ordered. The drink menu also draws consistent praise, from the Buffalo Check cocktail and Old Fashioned to a reasonably priced, interesting wine by the glass list. Brunch and dinner menus earn specific mentions, including the Irish Breakfast with black pudding, baked beans, brown bread and rashers, the house country bread with brie and fig jam, prime filet mignon, poutine, and the apple galette with caramel ice cream. Service is frequently described as welcoming and attentive, with several reviewers noting the staff never lets them wait long. A recurring complaint centers on food inconsistency: one diner reports a soft boiled scotch egg, ice cold gravy on chicken, and a Baileys brownie that missed the mark, while another says the food was good but not great for the price. Several suggest making reservations in advance.

“The atmosphere is great, it’s the type of place you’d want to dress nice for. Service was good was good as well. Purely giving this place 4 stars instead of 5, because for the price, you’d expect the food to be a tad better. Don’t get me …”

“Food was just okay. Everything had something wrong with it. Scotch egg was soft boiled, gravy poured on my chicken was ice cold, the Baileys brownie was more Baileys than anything etc. Everything was mediocre or missed the mark. Our server …”

“Top shelf experience. Our server Avery did a super job with explaining everything. I would highly recommend the Cheeseburger Royale! Done to perfection and cooked the way I ordered. Caesar salad again excellent. Lots of staff attending to everyone.”

“The Gage has for years been my favorite restaurant in Chicago. I find myself here every time I'm in town, just as I found myself here every few weeks when I lived in Chicago fifteen years ago. It was excellent then, and thankfully, nothing has changed. The Gage delivers in every respect, from the outstanding food at all times of the day to the stellar drink menu full of creative and classic selections; from the atmosphere--which between bar and multiple dining spaces always offers the vibe you're looking for--to the amazing staff. Special shout-out to Olivia, a friendly and skilled server, whose wealth of local knowledge is a secret weapon for the restaurant. She will set you up with the perfect next-stop spot for cocktails or night-life -- that is if you're even able to tear yourself away from another drink at the Gage. This is a Chicago institution in my book, and it never disappoints.”

“We went for Restaurant Week late lunch. The food was very good while service was great. We had a nice booth and found it very conversational friendly. Next time we will explore more of menu and try bar seating as well as Happy Hour.”
