About Exchequer Restaurant & Pub
Exchequer Restaurant & Pub is a decades-old American pub at 226 S Wabash Ave in Chicago, serving pizza, ribs, burgers, and a large beer selection. Much of its identity comes from the long-running pub format, where mains span a broad range and the bar sits alongside the dining room. The Personal Chicago Deep Dish Pizza with Sausage and Green Pizza anchors the menu as a signature dish, while Chicken Wings and Italian Beef with Fries round out the lineup of hearty pub staples. The kitchen handles both sit-down meals and bar-friendly plates, making the place work for a casual dinner or a stop for food and drinks. Reservations are advised during busier times, and the beer list adds another layer to the traditional pub setup.

Customer Review Summary
Diners consistently single out the personal deep dish pizza as the main draw, praising its fresh ingredients, airy dough, and cheese-to-sauce ratio. Close behind, the Italian beef with peppers draws repeated praise as far superior to famous chains, and the French onion soup is called divine with rich, delicious broth. The historic speakeasy vibe, low lighting, and Prohibition-era artifacts create a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere that feels like a trip back in time. A recurring caveat centers on the pizza falling short for some, with one reviewer finding the individual deep dish lacking sauce with chewy cheese, and a medium thin crust overdone and greasy. Also mentioned are the cheese curds, chicken parmesan, rigatoni with vodka sauce, and Reuben. Several recommend the personal pizza option, and one notes a server bringing free pickles after a companion declined hers.

“I don’t usually leave reviews, but I had to for The Exchequer in Chicago. The pizza was fresh with high-quality ingredients and really solid flavor overall. The atmosphere was a whole vibe; great funky music and a really comfortable, …”

“We took a quick trip to Exchequer Restaurant & Pub and decided to stop in for lunch, easily one of the best decisions of our trip. From the moment we walked in, the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. …”

“This was my first stop after dinner on a neighborhood bar crawl, so I didn't get to try the food, but really wish I did. Everything I saw bring served looked great. I had a few drinks at the bar just enjoying the atmosphere of a downtown Chicago bar/restaurant. Not a huge beer selection, but the bartender was nice and actually recommended the place next door for a bigger beer menu (I stopped in and reviewed that as well). I did find there entrance to the speakeasy, Club X, which was very cool and a totally different vibe than this bar. This was more restaurant than bar and looked like a great place for a family dinner outing or food and drinks after work.”

“The classic speakeasy vibe really sets this place apart, with low lighting and historical details that create a relaxed, almost hidden atmosphere. It is the kind of spot that feels unique the moment you walk in, making it easy to settle in and enjoy the experience. Service was quick and friendly, and you can see why so many people become regulars here. The food and drinks feel high quality, yet the prices are surprisingly reasonable compared to similar places nearby. Overall, a great find and definitely a place worth stopping into again.”

“The reviews were great for here. And said pizza best in area. So thought we would try it. Before a show. The chopped salad was fresh and very good. We loved the cheese curds. Get plenty and not greasy like like are sometimes. The pizza was a major disappointment. I got a individual deep dish . Cheese was chewy. It was just not a normal deep dish. Sauce is usually on top. Yhis had barely any sauce. And we got a medium crispy thin with sausage, Italian beef onion , half gairdner peppers. It was over done, not really thin or crispy. Very greasy. I couldn't eat that one. Just a disappointment.”
