Customer Review Summary
Dim sum is what reviewers return to most, and they praise it as high quality and tasty, with the duck egg custard buns and the fried turnip cake with XO sauce singled out. Close behind are the roasted duck, pork belly, fried hao fan and bao that one reviewer names as favourites, and a set menu that another calls great value. Several describe the staff as friendly and welcoming, including toward a young baby, and some say prices feel reasonable next to Chinese restaurants in the south. Complaints are mixed. One diner describes an arrogant, unprofessional male server on a Sunday and says it put them off a return trip, even as other staff were professional. Another found the veg and cashew nut dish very bland and the noodles marked spicy but not spicy, while a third found the food bland on a return visit with only three Chinese teas available. One notes no dim sum is served after 6 pm, so the dinner menu was not as good. A returning family said the food still tasted as good as it did twenty years ago.

“I was here two years ago and the food was really lovely. This time it was pretty bang average. They had only 3 selections of Chinese tea available, the food was a little bland, but some others were really tasty. The prices compare to the South is a lot cheaper, and inside the decor is really nice. There’s lots of car park spaces outside, they did give good customer service.”

“My family first ate at Maxi’s over twenty years ago, and the food still tastes as good as we remember! The dishes were flavourful, and the service was kind and attentive. We also had dessert at the end. Thank you for the delicious meal!”

“Today, five of us drove for an hour to celebrate Father’s Day early, as this year is my very first Father’s Day. I came to Maxim's with a very excited and expectant mood to eat dim sum, because I heard from friends who recommended that the dim sum here is of very high quality. Indeed, the dim sum was very high quality and memorable. However, there was a Chinese male employee today whose service attitude was very unprofessional and arrogant. We understand that Sunday is a day off for most, but as a server, one needs to have the professional attitude of a server. We look forward to dedicated staff. Although the food today was very delicious, the owner should review whether this employee should just take Sundays off, because he caused us not to make a special trip to Maxim's for dim sum next time. On the other hand, the other staff members were very professional during the meal, from taking orders to providing hoisin sauce. Thank you very much to them.”

“I have lived in York for almost 24 years and this evening was the first time I visited Maxis Chinese Restaurant. It did not disappoint. Everything from the food, atmosphere in the restaurant, the attentiveness of the staff was amazing. I have to say it was the best Chinese food I have had in a very, very long time. The price for the food was very reasonable too. We will definitely be coming back very soon to try more delicious food. Update 02/01/26: My wife and I have been several times since my first review above. Each time the service and food seems to get better and better. We have said it is the best Chinese Restaurant in York. Our last visit we had fantastic service from Louis, who was very attentive and gave us a great dining experience and thanks also to Helen who is also very friendly every time we visit!”

“One of the best place for Dim Sum 🥟 and Authentic Chinese cuisines in North East and Yorkshire region … They have plenty of seatings and not too packed on the weekdays but make sure you booked ahead on the weekends … Their toilets 🚽 facilities are really clean and also has disabled and baby changed room … You can collect points with their app and can get good offers and exchange for items … Chinese cuisines and Menu are generally quite authentic … Our favourites are their roasted duck and pork belly and fried hao fan and their bao … They have plenty of parking space and it’s free to park and the environment seemed quite safe … The only thing to take note is they close on every Wednesday …”
