About The Lowther
The Lowther is a gastropub in York at 8 Cumberland St, set on the river with hotel rooms above the bar, so guests can stay on site. A pool table gives the pub something to do beyond eating and drinking. The menu is a simple global one, with homemade chips and roasts, and a carvery area sits around the corner of the bar. Waitress service brings food to the table, and payment is taken up front when ordering. Students can find deals here, and the team runs the pub as a local rather than only a place for hotel guests.

Customer Review Summary
The riverside location is what reviewers raise most, with outdoor tables in the sun along the water called the main draw and the scenery called fantastic. Food earns praise close behind. Homemade chips are described as exceptional, one diner enjoyed a steak and ale pie with broccolini on the side, and another liked the haddock fish and chips. Pints are called nice and good, and a few mention friendly staff, waitress service and a pool table. Service is the recurring weak point. One reviewer waited a long time for food that arrived cold, another was ignored at the start and saw drinks arrive well after ordering, and a third found drinks not mixed properly. One person called the beer choices dull, and another found the pub quiet and a bit dead, though they tried a very sweet blue drink that tasted like a WKD. A guest staying in the rooms above found them toasty warm despite warnings about loud music, and one diner wished the website carried a current menu.

“Rudest staff I have ever come across. Discriminated myself and my friends when we were paying customers and abided by the rules. The manager was incredibly rude and cocky throughout the night, making uncalled for remarks to myself and my friends. Service was slow and drinks weren’t mixed properly.”

“We were blessed with the sun on the weekend we were in York. Thus we sat on the riverside in sun and enjoyed a pint, which was lovely. Service was quick and easy. Pints were nice, but the main draw was the outside seating in the sun along the riverside.”

“Came here with my friend, it's a very quiet pub the atmosphere is alright but a bit dead. I liked the blue thing, tastes similar to a wkd and it was very sweet although I wouldn't have it again but definitely worth to try it. Nice that there's a pool table the seating arrangement is decent and the staff are nice enough. Just lacking atmosphere really”
