Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast is what most reviewers come for, with the lamb shoulder, beef, chicken with stuffing and a vegan roast each praised, along with roast potatoes, gravy and veg cooked so it wasn't mush. Starters such as the halloumi and a pie and chips also draw compliments, and diners mention the wines and a beer. Reviewers describe friendly, attentive service, an open fire, candles and a dog-friendly village feel, and one praises hot food served on a hot plate. Several suggest booking in advance because it gets busy, though one party without a booking was still seated. The criticism is specific. One reviewer found the beef pretty rare without being warned, the other veg disappointing, the food not very hot, hot puddings arriving with ice cream instead of custard, and a sticky table with old beer spillage. Others mention slow service, most ales being finished, and no Yorkshire pudding option with the lamb. One reviewer wanted butter for the cheese board crackers.

“Love this pub. Oldie worldy. We got a great spot in the restaurant area, catered for on a busy Sunday with no booking. Really nice room with candles. Lovely friendly service and the best vegan roast I have had for a very long time. Ample portions and delicious. Will definitely go again. Recommended.”

“We thought we had a reservation for Sunday Lunch but had actually booked online via another pubs website. Our fault but the found us a table....thank you! Choice on a Sunday is limited I would say with roasts the only option. 3 of us chose beef. When it arrived it was pretty rare which was not to our taste (my Sons dog enjoyed it later though). We were not made aware of this when ordering. The rest of the meal was OK. Excellent roast potatoes and gravy but the rest of the veg was disappointing. Food was not very hot when it arrived. 2 of us had a cheese board which was nice but some butter for the crackers would have been good. 2 people chose hot puddings. Disappointing that both arrived with ice cream. They were not told when ordering that you had to specify that you wanted it with custard. The table was very sticky with old beer spillage and I would say that the whole place looked like it needed a good clean and dust. For the money paid I'm afraid it was all very disappointing. Sorry.”

“Authentic dog-friendly village pub. Open fire and an amazing welcome on a very cold day. Food was delicious - ate far more than I should’ve done! Attentive service without being intrusive. Really enjoyed my lunchtime visit and could quite happily have sat there all afternoon! Highly recommend - thank you!!”

“Great place to wind down after a long hike around SouthDowns. Amazing food and staff are brilliantly accommodating, will recommend anything on the menu, prices are on a bit of upper side but you will taste the quality of the ingredients . Wish they had better selection of beers/ales as when we visited most of the ales were finished. Would recommend to book in advance as the place gets pretty busy. But staff are very friendly and i am sure they will try to accommodate you if you just walk in.”
