About Penn Chippy

On Penn Road in Wolverhampton, Penn Chippy is a fish and chips shop and takeaway serving the daily fast food crowd. Cod and chips form the core of the menu, with curry sauce and saveloy available as sides on the fish and chips specials. Kebabs, including kebab meat and pitta, round out the regular offering alongside chips, which most customers order as a standalone item. High chairs at the tables make the shop workable for families with young children who want to eat in rather than take away. Ordering is on a walk-in basis with no booking needed, and the shop opens daily. The business has changed hands under new ownership, continuing to run from the same Penn Road premises.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the fish and chips, with the cod and the classic chips singled out as hot, tasty and fresh, and one diner noting it was real cod rather than a substitute. Close behind are the kebabs, described as fresh with a little crisp on the meat, and a chicken tikka pizza that one reviewer calls well priced. Large portions of chips and onion rings come up, along with friendly staff, and one group praised a large fish, chips and peas order for a church lunch. The caveat is substantial among recent reviews. Several say portions have shrunk while prices rose, with one reporting items missing from a phoned-in order and being told the owner has high bills. Others say the food and service have slipped, with long waits. One reviewer describes a staff member laughing when asked about gluten-free fish and chips, which the shop does not offer. Another reports a worker handling a kebab without gloves after touching the till and card reader. One reviewer who asked for battered chips was told the shop sticks to classic chip shop chips, and still found them piping hot.

“I had a portion of chips and they tasted disgusting. I also had a sausage and that was even worse it tasted horribly cheap and selling for upto 8 quid for that is horrific. If you want nice food go to Wombourn Chippy instead it is 100x better”

“A very good takeaway in my opinion and I have tried most in Wolverhampton and they are all average in food quality However Penn chippy is above average the quality of the food is very good especially the quality of the chips I am presuming Paji(the owner)uses a very high quality alloo (potatoes)best chips I have ever tried pure and simple.I also like the chicken tika pizza which is absolutely fantastic and very well priced.Paji meaning brother in Punjabi is a nice chap and very welcoming and polite aswell ,which I feel is relavant to mention.”

“I had a kebab from here today and it was absolutely spot on. Pitta was cooked great, kebab meat was really tasty and cooked to perfection with that little bit of crisp so really tasty and the salad was nice and fresh so all in all really happy with the food I had here today A+”
  • Mel Angier
“Food was served hot by friendly staff. Large portions of both chips and onion rings. Cash is preferred but they do accept credit. Parking can be tricky, but there is a small car park for the businesses.”
  • Rosamund Spinks
“They supplied us with 68 portions of fish chips and peas for an annual Christmas lunch for seniors in our Church group. Everyone enjoyed it. The food was excellent, hot and tasty and the service was excellent especially from Jin, the Manager. We will definitely be using them again.”
