  “Flew all the way from Australia to finally sample a Wigan Kebab and a Smack Barm with pey’wet from The Trawlerman. Let me tell you, airlines should list this place as the final destination. The Wigan Kebab? A pie in a barm. Simple. Beautiful. Philosophical. It’s the sort of invention that makes you question the very existence of cutlery. Then came the Smack Barm with pey’wet. Oh my days. One bite in and I swear I could hear Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve drifting through the ether. The staff are unreal and are proper friendly without trying too hard, unlike that aunt who insists on “puttin’ t’kettle on” every five minutes. The whole gaff feels less like a takeaway and more like a pilgrimage. The Trawlerman isn’t a chippy; it’s the Sistine Chapel of salt and vinegar. Wigan, you’ve absolutely outdone yourself. I’m off home to tell every Aussie that spiritual enlightenment comes deep-fried. Ta ra for now, shaggers.”

  “Seizing a break in the rainfall, I decided it was the opportune moment to pay a visit to The Trawlerman in Wigan. Given the acclaim surrounding this fish and chip shop, my expectations were lofty, yet they were met without disappointment. The traditional chippy boasted indoor and outdoor seating, with the interior design catching the eye through its black and white menu boards and clean equipment. The staff were professional, and of smart appearence, and friendly. My order included a large fish (cod) and large chips, alongside what is affectionately termed a Smash Barm - essentially a battered potato scallop nestled within one half of a barmcake, crowned with mushy peas and capped with the other half of the barmcake (bread roll), and it was tasty. I then sampled the celebrated Wigan Kebab, a simple concoction of a meat and potato pie served on a buttered barmcake, which was equally enjoyable. The visit was enjoyable, and I wouldn't hesitate to make a return should I find myself again in Wigan.
