About The Golden Dragon
The Golden Dragon is a Chinese takeaway at 116-118 Preston Rd in Wigan, where the starters are made in house. The prawn toast and spring rolls are homemade, which gives the menu a good place to begin. Cantonese and Peking dishes make up the main part of the range, and curry dishes come with curry sauce. The special fried rice combines pork, chicken and prawns, so it can serve as a full dish in its own right. Portions are large, which suits sharing a few dishes between people. Salt and pepper chips round out the order.

Customer Review Summary
Prawn toast is the most repeated draw, with reviewers calling the homemade version the best they have had and praising the balanced prawn to toast ratio. Close behind are the special fried rice, with large pieces of pork and chicken on top and plenty of meat and prawns underneath, and the salt and pepper chips, described as crispy. The wonton soup, special chow mein, Cantonese and Peking dishes, beef satay and curry dishes also earn praise. Many call it restaurant quality food at fair prices, with generous portions, and one reviewer cautions against over ordering for that reason. A few mention friendly staff and a busy phone line. The negatives are sharp but few. One reviewer found the sweet and sour chicken slimy with soggy pieces, the fried rice paler than boiled rice and the chips reheated, while another called the Singapore vermicelli slop and said the salt and pepper chips had been recooked. Several returning customers describe coming back after years of disappointing Chinese takeaways elsewhere.

“The best Chinese takeaway I’ve ever been to - and I’ve tried a lot over the years! Everything I’ve ordered has been great, and the staff are always so friendly. I genuinely look forward to ordering from here most weeks. Highly recommend!”

“One of the best Chinese takeaways I’ve ever had. I have had a meal from this takeaway multiple times and I am very annoyed there is no takeaway of this incredible standard closer to me. I’ve previously enjoyed the Cantonese and Peking dishes with the Chow Mein and Salt and Pepper chips. All dishes have been superior to my local’s. Kung Po was meant to be good (though didn’t sample due to allergies). Delivery times vary, according to the person whose house we were staying at, though usually on the quicker side. Opens at 4:30. When we called phone line was busy, so keep trying. Definitely the best Chinese I’ve ever had, and possibly even the best takeaway.”

“This has to be the worse Chinese food I’ve ever had. My usual takeaway was closed so I thought I would order from somewhere else to try. The sweet and sour chicken was slimy and tiny pieces of soggy chicken . The sauce was thin and spicy. Chips tasted like the had been warmed up several times. I ordered fried rice . It was paler than boiled rice. The only half decent item was the tub of curry sauce.”

“Really good Chinese takeaway. I've not had Chinese takeaway for years after bad meals in the past elsewhere. Finding the Golden Dragon in Standish has been a revelation, really good restaurant quality food, fair priced and probably amongst the best I've had over the years. My tip, the portions are generous so try not to over order, easier said than done I know as it all looks amazing and is really delicious! 😁”

“After the demise of the great Happy Valley in Aspull, we were left searching for good "non standard" Chinese takeaway. Then we found Lams in Arlington. Which sadly closed in January. Again leaving in search of the holy grail. It's about a 12-13 min drive to the golden dragon, so not exactly local but we have no good options anymore around Blackrod. I tried this place because of the good reviews on Google. I can honestly say this place is amazing. It has competitive pricing and everything was really good quality. Also the portion sizes were really large. We had the fried combo starter, which was really good. Beef satay, fried rice, chips and crackers. Was absolutely phenomenal. We found our new non-local, local takeout. Highly recommend.”
