Quick info
About The Moon Under Water
The Moon Under Water is a Wetherspoons pub in Wigan at 7a Market Pl, set in a former bank and hotel building. The large venue has plenty of nooks and crannies, and the view outside takes in the precinct. The menu runs from a cooked breakfast to fish and chips and a Steak & Kidney Pudding, with some dishes unavailable at times. Cask ales sit on the bar, including Jaipur. The pub works on a walk-in basis, with no reservations. No music plays inside, and football is shown on the TV, which makes match days livelier.

Customer Review Summary
Complaints about food and upkeep recur, though. Two cooked breakfasts arrived cold or lukewarm, one with fatty bacon, poorly done poached eggs and barely toasted bread, and another reviewer found many evening dishes unavailable. One says a table with spilt vinegar was never cleaned, so the menus were used to cover it, and football made the room rowdy. One drinker's cask pints, judged past their best, were swapped only after a dispute, and the replacement Jaipur was also poor.

“We found a table, but unfortunately it needed cleaning. We asked the waitress if someone could clean it as there appeared to be vinegar spilt across it, which my partner only realised when she put her arm in it. Nobody came back to clean the table, so when our food arrived, we ended up using the menus to cover the dirty area. The condiments were also running low, and there was no mayonnaise available. The restaurant was extremely rowdy due to the football being on. While I appreciate that football can create a lively atmosphere, there was one young lad, around 8 years old, shouting and swearing at someone he knew, including using offensive language about their weight. I would have expected his parents to address this, but equally, given how disruptive it was, I would have expected the management to step in if necessary. Overall, the experience was disappointing. Basic things such as having the table cleaned and keeping condiments stocked should really have been taken care of, and the atmosphere could have been managed better.”

“Great value for money as you'd expect from Wetherspoons but there were some issues with the food. Eating in the evening we found many dishes not available and the cooked breakfast was lukewarm which wasn't very appetising and also surprising since it was only about 15 minutes after they opened. To be fair, I also found dishes unavailable at another Wetherspoons in outer London a few weeks ago, so maybe there are delivery / supply problems.”

“Took two pints of cask back to the bar due to the head on the beer looking like floating scum. The guy behind the bar has zero customer skills, telling me that I couldn't change it because I didn't like it! I reiterated that the beer was well past it's 'sell buy' and that i wouldn't be drinking it. After ruffling a few feathers he begrudgingly swapped them for two pints of Jaipur and I paid the difference, unfortunately the Jaipur was just as poor. Perhaps it was the wee mans sour face that was turning the beer? 🤔”

“Pleasant experience overall. Very quiet and was able to eat my breakfast and read a book in peace. The staff were helpful as I had never visited before. Food was warm and cooked nicely.”
