Customer Review Summary

Friendly staff are what reviewers mention most, with several calling the team welcoming and one server lovely even when service lagged. The rotisserie chicken is called tasty, and the wing and wave combo and an upgraded gammon arrive well cooked, with a steak ordered medium coming out medium. Kids' activity packs and ice cream sundaes please families, and the verandah gets praise for its sea views. The recurring complaint is slow, understaffed service. Diners describe long waits for food and drinks even at quiet lunchtimes, an empty or sparsely stocked salad bar with no clean bowls, and nearly twenty minutes waiting to pay. One party was not told of a long wait until well after arriving, and their toddler's meal came after the adults'. Others report a cold burger, burnt chicken, tough gammon, and onion rings missing from plates. One reviewer mentions flies and dirty plates left on tables. A reviewer who had waited for the bill said staff told them to walk around looking for mayonnaise themselves.

“we booked a large party meal, that’s an image below of the jacket potato and that’s an image of the gravy boat, we waited an hour and half for the food which we didn’t mind because we was told about the wait, the young waitress was lovely but we felt she was being bullied ! perhaps the team need retraining in people skills and working as a team no one should feel that upset at the work place, the venue is beautiful perhaps it was just a one off ? but i really think that everyone should be nice to each especially to a young team member.”

“Spyglass Inn was wonderful! We booked a table for 4 during the evening dinner service. Booking is strongly recommended. We were seated promptly at a nice little booth in the main restaurant area and provided with menus. After a short time, Emma, assistant manager, greeted us and took our order. Unfortunately, there were many items unavailable, including soft drinks - the first reason for 4🌟 food score. Emma was very welcoming and made my young children feel comfortable and confident when talking. Emma brought our drinks order over and an activity pack each for the children, which is a great little touch and kept them occupied. We used the salad bar and this was another reason for 4🌟 food score - we took the last 4 clean bowls and the bar had limited salad available, which remained sparingly stocked all evening. Our food was served and, wow, it looked delicious! The kids meals were presented nicely and were plentiful. Our meals, the wing and wave combo and an upgraded 14oz gammon, were cooked and plated beautifully - I ordered my steak medium and I got a medium steak! After the mains, the children had their ice cream sundaes. Their choice of sauce, which had already been limited, was then also unavailable but we were offered alternatives and settled for a different one. When finished, Emma checked how everything was and we assured her we had thoroughly enjoyed the meal and visit. We paid at the table, making use of the 'kids eat for £1' offer (£3 if including a dessert, drinks not included, upgraded food options not included). An enjoyable evening with excellent food and a pleasant atmosphere.”

“We arrived and had to wait a while to be seen too, service was slow and it was not even at capacity. One lot of Food got sent back as egg was not cooked and onion rings were missing from meal. Once Food was on table, it was very good and wood recommend if service was better. I have to say the server we had was lovely and friendly”

“We have used this Harvester many times over the years, and have loved being here. It has some amazing views great decor and generally great staff. However on this occasion the experience had put us off so, that we canceled our other bookings for the week. I must stress. The food was not the issue. It was how very poorly it was being run. With very short, and unexperienced staff. Salad bar empty, no bread and hardly any salad dressing. Had to ask a member of staff to replenish the stations. Very long waits on food and drinks. We politely asked for some mayonnaise and was told by a member of staff you'll just have to walk around find one. Walking around strangers eating their meals looking for Mayo was not acceptable for us to do. Asking for the bill and having to wait almost 20 minutes to pay for it and leave was also extremely frustrating. We missed the entertainment we planned to get back for. I was very tempted to just walk out at this point as the kids were board and moaning. I had to return to the bar and had to stress that if no member of staff will take our payment within the next 10 minutes, we will be leaving regardless. I really do hope things massively improve before we try this place again. It has great potential.”

“We visited last week and had a terrible experience. We booked for 7:15pm but were not told on arrival there would be a 1½-hour wait for food. It wasn’t until we’d already been waiting around 45 minutes that we were informed of the delay. Had we known beforehand, we would have gone elsewhere, especially as we had a young toddler with us, who had lost his appetite by the time his children’s meal finally arrived – after the adults’ meals. The restaurant was clearly understaffed for the peak summer period, but that’s a management issue, not the fault of the staff, who did their best. The whole experience reflected very poor management. The food was also disappointing. The burger was stone cold, the rotisserie chicken was burnt, the gammon was tough and didn’t come with the advertised onion rings, and the salad bar was half empty. We also had to wait around 15 minutes after ordering before receiving clean cutlery. The bar area was untidy, with dirty plates left on numerous tables and flies everywhere, creating a very unpleasant dining environment. For a meal costing a total of over £90, this was completely unacceptable. We won’t be returning until the management significantly improves the way this restaurant is run or is replaced. We would strongly advise others to avoid this restaurant in its current state.”
