Quick info
About Wetherby Whaler
Wetherby Whaler is a fish and chips takeaway on Calder Island in Wakefield, with a sit-down restaurant running alongside the takeaway section. The gluten free menu comes with separate condiments, which reduces cross-contamination and gives coeliac diners a way to order fish and chips with confidence. Haddock is the fish, and the Whaler meal is a sizeable fish and chips order for bigger appetites. A pensioners' 3 course meal is offered for older diners who want to eat in. The business also runs sites in Wetherby, York, Pudsey, Outwood and Guiseley. Live entertainment and shows are advertised, and a car park serves the site, though it can fill up.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the fish and chips, described as cooked perfectly, with white fish, good batter and chips that are never soggy. One reviewer credits the Yorkshire dripping. The Whaler meal is called big and cooked just right, and the pensioners' three course meal is called very good value. Close behind, two coeliac diners single out the gluten free menu, including separate condiments to reduce contamination, and say it made them feel valued. Several mention quick seating, fast service and polite staff, and one enjoyed the Mandarin surprise dessert. Cost draws mixed views. One says the meal was not cheap but worth the extra, while another objects to a breadcake that seemed frozen rather than fresh and to an added service charge. A longtime customer reports that the haddock tasted overly fishy on two visits, with part of one portion dry and crispy. Even so, a party of six describes being served quickly at a family treat that pleased everyone at the table.

“Lovely restaurant, seated immediately and didn't wait long for the food. Reasonably priced too, around £20 per person for food and drinks. Staff were all working together and all very polite.”

“I loved here, had really good service, very polite and attentive. I love having fish and chips in this part of the country as they cook it in what I assume is "Yorkshire dripping". I had a dessert here aswell and wow every mouthful was just joy! (Mandarin surprise). Would definitely come here again and maybe catch a show next time as they were advertising live entertainment.”

“£2.50 for a breadcake! it wasn't fresh neither - think they freeze them. Plus we were charged a service charge too. On a positive note the food was nice though.”

“Took my elderly.mum on friday 24th April she is severely Coeliac and gluten intolerant. The experience was amazing from start to finish even separate condiments to reduce contamination. The gluten free menu. Was exceptional and didnt make her feel seperate from the rest of the group and made her feel valued. The food was exceptional. And the staff who served us went above and beyond to make the visit worth while. My mum said it was the best place she has been for supporting gluten free and can not wait ro return.”
