About Marmalade on the Square
On Bull Ring in Wakefield, Marmalade on the Square is a cafe, coffee shop and tea room open for daytime service Monday to Saturday. The afternoon tea option comes with unlimited tea, and the counter also displays hand made cakes such as oreo cake and rhubarb and strawberry cake alongside sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes and wraps. Vegan and gluten free options, including vegan scones, are available for those with dietary needs. Seating is arranged upstairs by the window and in a quieter corner, with heaters used to keep the space warm on colder days. A step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs, high chairs are on hand for families with young children, and dogs are welcome inside. Outdoor seating gives an option for eating outside. Reservations are recommended, and larger groups are seated together where possible. The room can get busy, so a wait for a table or food is sometimes part of a visit.

Customer Review Summary
Afternoon tea draws the most enthusiasm, with reviewers praising the unlimited tea refills, hand made cakes like the nutella cookie cupcake and oreo cake, and the rhubarb and custard tea paired with rhubarb and strawberry cake. Close behind, the rhubarb special drinks and vegan options, including a vegan scone with butter and jam, get repeat mentions, and staff are consistently called friendly, with one diner noting a staff member personally prepared food to accommodate a severe nut allergy. Several also single out the focaccia as a highlight. Complaints center on food execution: one reviewer waited over half an hour for a wrap and found the houmous underwhelming, another described a jacket potato that was hard inside with an unwanted mustard dressing on the side salad, and a third noted plates still had soap suds on them and the room felt cold despite heaters. A few mention busy periods and noise from music and coffee machines affecting the visit. Repeat visitors describe being seated in a quiet corner by the window and receiving fresh pots of tea brought out like clockwork.

“Attended here as a family of 4. Greeted straight away. Service with a smile. Plenty of seating options. Food was very reasonably priced and tasty. Just a bit noisy with the music and coffee machines.”

“Staff very attentive and friendly we normally struggle to come out and eat at cafes/smaller businesses due to a severe nut allergy however Racheal was amazing and ensured to personally make the food herself and look after us the whole time. Lovely place with lovely food! ◡̈”

“Went for lunch today as I’ve been wanting to try this place for ages as I’ve seen the excellent reviews. I had jacket potato, which although was quite small and crispy on the outside, the inside was still quite hard. The side salad had a mustard dressing (I think) which wasn’t great, I would have preferred plain, although normally I like mustard dressing. Both my friend and I didn’t like the dressing, and ended up leaving the salad. Disappointed as we’d gone out for lunch for my birthday and thought it was going to be a treat. Service was great, and staff were friendly, but food let it down.”

“Great place for lunch, coffee and cake, we called in as a group of 6 during the rhubarb festival and friendly staff found us a table no problem. Great food (the rhubarb special drinks were great too), fast and friendly service, would come here again if we are in the area”
