About Castle Cafe
Castle Cafe sits on the grounds of Sandal Castle on Manygates Ln in Wakefield, with walls lined with boards telling the history of the 1460 Wakefield Battle. The cafe covers breakfast and coffee shop favourites, and vegan scones are offered alongside oat milk as an option. Seating is available both indoors and outside, giving diners the choice of eating in the open air. A step-free entrance allows easy access for visitors with mobility needs, and high chairs are on hand for families with young children. Dogs are welcome as long as they stay calm. Reservations are recommended, and the room draws a steady crowd so a wait can be expected. It opens daily except Tuesdays and Wednesdays, for daytime service only. Toilets are available on site, and parking nearby can be inconsistent when the cafe is busy.

Customer Review Summary
Vegan scones and coffee draw the most repeat mentions at this cafe on the grounds of Sandal Castle, with reviewers describing regular visits to "fuel up on scones and coffee" and praising the freshly baked options with no charge for oat milk. Close behind, the coffee and hot chocolate come up again and again as reasonably priced, alongside a good selection of sweet treats. The dog friendly policy and outdoor seating near the castle ruins are noted often, with dogs welcome to sit outside while owners enjoy a drink, and several call the staff friendly and welcoming. A few mention the historic setting, with boards on the walls detailing the 1460 Wakefield Battle. Complaints are limited but one reviewer describes the space as dirty, pointing to yellowed walls they attribute to smoke from the kitchen and finding it hard to breathe, while another notes parking can be hit and miss when busy and a bit noisy inside. One visitor suggested the cafe could sell Sandal Castle souvenirs, something they felt was missing from an otherwise well stocked stop.

“Nice little cafe located on the grounds of sandal castle. Came for a quick drink as we were going to eat elsewhere but a fantastic choice of food available at very reasonable prices. Lots of drinks options as well. Toilets available. Dog friendly. Outdoor seating as well as indoor. Service was friendly, welcoming and helpful. A pity they don't sell souvenirs for Sandal castle, maybe something to think about for them.”

“Such friendly staff, delicious food and great coffee! Plus, it's dog friendly - so lucky to be able to walk around The Castle and meet up with friends for coffee and chat, while my dog enjoys a sausage! Certainly recommend. 👌”
- Karl Keegan
“Fair priced and they make a good brew. However... its filthy...the walls are yellow opposed to being white.... assuming thats stained from the smoke coming from the kitchen as currently sat here struggling to breathe 🙄”
