About The Black Horse, A Heartwood Inn
The Black Horse, A Heartwood Inn is a pub on Cornmarket in Thame, with a brasserie at the rear of the building. The kitchen cooks pub fare with a French twist and cooks its dishes from scratch. That approach puts soufflés on the menu, with a cheese soufflé to start and a pistachio soufflé served with chocolate ice cream for dessert. The Jerusalem artichoke risotto is among the mains, and the vegan dishes go beyond a standard curry or falafel. Dogs are welcome, so owners can bring them along. A private room is available for groups celebrating an occasion.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the cheese soufflé starter, described as divine, with the pistachio soufflé and chocolate ice cream pudding close behind. Others single out the Sunday roast, with its endless potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and veg, along with the Jerusalem artichoke risotto, the schnitzel with potato salad, and creative vegan options. The shaded garden is repeatedly mentioned, including by those who brought dogs, and reviewers describe friendly, relaxed service even when the place was packed. Complaints are fewer but specific. One reviewer was handed the evening menu at lunch and found the response to a bill query defensive, and called the food average. Another found the burger underwhelming, with one small chewy strip of bacon, a soggy bun and eight chips. A third found the mussels small with many empty shells and the mains a bit meh. One couple noted the service forgot water and condiments a couple of times, yet they stayed past their table time without any pressure to leave.

“I dont often give un prompted reviews but this embarrassing representation of pub food requires that someone challenges and points out where expectations fall flat. This is the burger. I paid an extra £2 for bacon (one small chewy strip) and £1.50 for gorgonzola cheese. The bun, I'm pretty sure they got from the local co-op. Originally it didn't come with anything other than the burger, bacon and cheese. When I asked if there should have been salad and gherkins etc, it was taken back and reappeared with lettuce, Tomomato and gherkins on a soggy bottom bun. The eight (8!) chips I got with it were ok.... Come on. Britain can do better than this.”

“Delicious Sunday roasts! The cheese soufflé starter is divine as was the pistachio soufflé with chocolate ice cream.”

“We met some friends here for lunch as a halfway point between Witney and Chesham, and it was a wonderful choice. The food was genuinely extremely good, tasty, and beautifully presented. It was refreshing to see excellent alternative lunch options on the menu rather than just the standard Sunday roasts—though their endless potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, and veg are absolutely brilliant! The restaurant is set in a beautiful location. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and very smartly presented. We really appreciated the relaxed vibe. There was absolutely no pressure on us to leave, even though we stayed 30 minutes over our allocated table time. Minor Hiccups: Service was a little forgetful a couple of times, missing items like water and condiments. However, the team was so lovely that this minor issue will certainly not prevent us from returning. We will definitely be back!”

“Popped here for a lovely Sunday afternoon roast. Food and service exceptional. Sat outside in the garden. 2 starters 2 mains 2 wines 2 beers and service less than £96. Lovely”

“We visited for a late lunch after spotting the lunchtime offer and deciding to make a last minute visit. Unfortunately, we were given the evening menu rather than the lunchtime menu, and when we queried the bill the response felt defensive rather than helpful, which left us disappointed. We’ve eaten here quite a few times over the years and have always enjoyed it, but this visit was very different. The food was fairly average and didn’t seem to be of the same standard we remembered. We even wondered whether the restaurant had changed hands because the overall experience felt so different. It’s a shame, as this has been somewhere we’ve happily returned to in the past, but based on this visit we won’t be rushing back.”
