About The Market Inn
The Market Inn is a pub in Tavistock, at 2 Whitchurch Rd, and it now runs under new owners. The menu pairs seafood with game, with ocean pie, scallops and salt and pepper cuttlefish alongside game pie and venison liver. Fish and chips and a trio of sausages on mash sit among the other plates. Stone walls and wood burner stoves fill the interior. Tables can be booked. A small car park behind the pub is reached down a steep drive.

Customer Review Summary
The complaints are specific. One party of eight was told five times that they had to leave their table by a set time, found the roast cold and skipped pudding. Another reviewer felt unwelcome as an outsider and described a dismissive reaction from the person serving a pulled pork bun at the garden barbecue. One diner noted the staff were short handed on a busy night, yet the food stayed good.

“Breaking news: man walks into a bar This pub is a reflection of Tavistock itself which I had presumed would be a warm enjoyable hub next to busy Dartmoor. But sadly no, on the surface it was a lovely atmosphere, obviously a local favourite in a town which on a Sunday evening was largely like a ghost town. Happy folk standing at the bar, a busy beer garden with live music and a barbecue, groups of locals having a nice catch up. First of all, the closeted localism in this place was palpable, the uneasy feeling projected your way by punters and staff alike when it’s assumed you ‘may be’ from somewhere else. Indeed I now may be from somewhere else, but I was born in Torquay and have great a love of the West Country. Secondly the service itself. Wanting something to eat, to be told the barbecue in the garden was just finishing up - fine. The gentleman at the barbecue seemed to need someone to come and tell him what to do with the glut of food that was still left. Eventually getting a pulled pork bun served in a sloppy fashion. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m used to casual, basic food and service but the look on the gentleman’s face when I thanked him for the food was one of distain and was very actually rude, enough to know that the small town mentality here has seeped into the seemingly most unlikely of places. I want to be wrong but I’m not. I want to say this was the loveliest of places with all the trappings of warm Devonshire hospitality, but I can’t. If Tavistock folk and businesses can’t manage civility and genuine friendly hospitality with ordinary folk visiting from another place, then they will have the hardest of times with the times that are coming. As for Tavistock itself - a deep shame to see such an important, historic town to have diminished to a soulless shell with its local residents, underneath the facade, echoing this sentiment.”

“Didn’t appreciate being told 5 times from 14:15 that our party had to leave our table by 16:00, I understand the that the table was needed but there is way of speaking to people when you are front of house. Felt rushed and that our custom (party of 8) was not important. Roast was ok, but cold, so did not take a chance on pudding so left well before 16:00. Very poor experience and will not be returning.”

“Wow, amazing Sunday lunch. Giant Yorkshire pudding, even for the vegetarians and not one, but two vegi options! Unheard of 😂😂 service was great, food was great. Two vegetarians and two meat eaters left very happy. Clean plates all round. Will Definitely go back to try second vegi option 😁”

“Popped in with my wife and elderly mother for lunch. Recently re-opened under new management. Staff we very lovely and accommodating. Fish and chips were lovely, freshly cooked with lovely crispy batter. Nothing was too much trouble. My wife had the trio of sausages on a bed of mash. Lovely and warm with a welcoming fire in the fireplace.”

“Food was very tasty and atmosphere great. Seafood pasta was delicious, as was the duck pate (special). Pear and burrata was a little bland. Game pie excellent. Service was friendly and attentive.”
