On Alkerton Rd in Stonehouse, The Badger is a free house pub with a rotating range of cask ales, including ones from Wickwar, alongside a large selection of locally produced ciders. The kitchen changes its menu with the seasons and includes a Sunday roast. Dogs are welcome, and the bar keeps a dog menu for them. Customer Review Summary
The Sunday roast draws the most praise. One diner describes a huge portion with slow cooked belly pork, six pigs in blankets and stuffing called exquisite, while another calls it a really good roast lunch. Close behind are wings cooked with the right amount of Sriracha, piping hot fries, a soup and whitebait starter, and a shared bread and butter pudding with custard. Reviewers also single out the beers and ciders, friendly staff and a dog menu at the bar. The food draws mixed reports. The roast beef was tough and chewy for one diner, the brownie sundae was dry, and the venison shepherds pie came with little veg. Another found thick cut chips raw and a steak sandwich chewy in a soggy roll. Several mention tiny tables that feel uncomfortable for four, limited parking, and a long wait for food. One family heard a staff member swear after their toddler smashed a glass. One diner moved to the garden because the music inside was too loud, and called the tables and garden clean and tidy.

“I love the badger. Its probably a good 30mins drive but well worth it. Good food and atmosphere. Eastington village are very lucky to have such a community pub.”

“Reasonable selection of food from their menu. The quality of food was fine and the value was on point. Service and atmosphere was great. Time from ordering, to receiving food was a bit long and there was limited parking.”

“I used to love this pub. The positives were that the service was mostly good, our waitress was very honest and friendly. The menu had clearly labelled allergens which is also great to see. However when our toddler accidentally smashed a glass, another member of staff swore in front of our children, about having to clean it up. The food was really not great. I appreciate It’s difficult to cook thick cut chips all the way through without burning them and on this occasion, they were just raw and smelt of old oil. The steak sandwich was chewy, tasted of melted butter and was in a soggy roll. The children’s food was ok though as their meal came with fries so they were cooked through. I very much regretted choosing to eat my birthday lunch here”

“Really good roast lunch, highly recommend. Sat out in the garden as music playing in the pub was a bit too loud for me. Tables clean and garden was tidy. Will definitely go back for another Sunday roast.”

“The car park is small and there are no disabled bays, though the walk to the pub is not any kind of distance, it would be a problem if you need extra width to get out the vehicle. Coming through the entrance, which had one of the double doors locked which was a bit of a problem with my disability, your greeted by a cosy looking pub that is a bit gloomy but your eyes soon adjust. The room is in a horseshoe shape with the bar opposite the door and seating extended to the left and right with spurs coming off each side. The staff were very friendly and cheerful with a good standard of banter. We were given the right amount of time to settle before someone came and took our drinks order. These were brought to us quickly and we then ordered mains. Again, there was no long wait. I had the 3 meat Sunday roast with pigs in blankets as a side. Not the cheapest at £23. When it arrived, I was very pleasantly surprised. The portion was huge, much better than any pub I think I have ever been to. Lots of green veg, carrots, parsnips and 3 roasties. I was expecting 2 or 3 pigs and was astonished to get 6!!. The pigs were divine as was the veggies. The slow cooked belly pork was melt in your mouth tender, but no crackling. The chicken was slightly overdone so, whilst it was moist, it was a bit tough. The beef was the let down, a bit tough and chewy, not the way I like my meat, but each to their own. The stuffing again was exquisite. One little moan, needed a bit more gravy or your own gravy boat, maybe. Onto the pudding. Brownie sundae. Too much cream, not enough ice cream and the brownie was dry, almost as if it was leftover brownie from previous days, not saying it was, but that's what it tasted like. Saying that, I did like it, but it could have been better. Once again in summary, the staff were brilliant, the food was excellent but needed, in my humble opinion, a tweak or two and not the cheapest but more than worth it. The family all loved there food as well. We will definitely be going again and again and again......you get it. Thank you Badger.”
