Canal Tavern
About Canal Tavern
Canal Tavern sits right beside the canal next to a lock on Hardingswood Rd in Stoke On Trent, where benches and planters at the front let drinkers sit outside and watch the boats work through. Inside, the pub keeps a pool table and a dart board, and large-screen TVs carry live sport including football. Evenings bring karaoke and disco nights with a live DJ. The bar does not serve food, so it runs as a drinks-only pub. A step-free entrance means visitors with mobility needs can get in without stairs, and dogs are welcome alongside their owners. Doors open daily and there is no booking, so you simply walk in and order at the bar. A small car park sits at the rear.

Customer Review Summary
The recurring complaint is the exterior. Several describe a tired, uncared-for look, with dead flowers and weeds in the planters, badly painted benches, and one reviewer reporting a discarded vape, empty pop bottles, and cigarette ends around the tables. One notes people walking past to the busier Blue Bell. Another family left early because dance music boomed from every speaker, even outside, too loud to talk over. A few mention no food and a limited bar choice, and one says it suits locals more than a special trip.

“This pub is a must go to if in the area, such lovely staff and an inviting atmosphere. This pub is very homely and is lovely if you want an evening to chill out and play darts and pool, overall this pub is lovely and a must go.”

“We visited this pub yesterday on a lovely hot Sunday afternoon. The pub was empty except for a couple sitting at the bar. We ordered our drinks and sat outside. The exterior looked tired as did the tables and seats. There was a broken vape discarded on a table that had obviously been there a while and empty pop bottles & fag ends discard all around. Several people walked past this pub and crossed on the locks of the canal to visit the Blue Bell which looked very busy. This pub used to be very popular but now seems neglected with little interest from whoever may be running it now. Such a shame!”

“Clean but a bit tired looking pub. Don’t do food which is a shame. Not a bad point of Guinness. Atmosphere wasn’t good but went in early afternoon so don’t know about evenings. TVs for football and pool table. Small car park at the rear.”

“Lovely little canal side pub near kidsgrove, the bar staff were super friendly and helped out with a bowl of water for the canine punters, also chatting with the narrow boat folk was an absolute delight as they used the nearby lock to continue their journey.”

“Really let down by the outside! The pub is in a great location at the side of the canal but doesn't look very inviting with planters full of dead flowers and weeds plus benches that look like they were painted by a child, just looks uncared for. We past other pubs along the canal that had lovely beer gardens that were really busy yet despite its location this pub had plenty of empty seats outside. On the plus side it was a cracking pint.”
