About Forgan's St Andrews

Forgan's St Andrews is a Scottish restaurant on Market St in St Andrews, housed in a former cleek factory that now hosts weekly ceilidhs. The menu covers traditional Scottish dishes, including Cullen skink soup and fish and chips, with leek bread on the side. Whisky is a focus of the drinks list, with flights drawn from different regions of Scotland. The back rooms are decorated with mail carrier bags and newspaper articles, and a private dining room gives groups a space of their own. The entrance is up an enclosed corridor with plants and flowers, behind a flower shop.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips is the dish reviewers name most, with crispy batter and thick chips called fantastic, though one found it unsalted and another had eaten better elsewhere. Cullen skink divides opinion: one reviewer calls it hearty with plenty of fish, while another found it watery and short on flavour. Close behind, the leek bread and a vegan burger draw praise, and a few also enjoyed the seabass with nduja cassoulet, chicken with fennel and bacon, and apple and berry crumble with ginger ice cream. Complaints centre on uneven mains: a tough pork fillet, dry chicken, a dry sticky toffee pudding, and mussels whose fries one diner found too salty to eat. A few call prices on the high side. Service earns repeated praise, with servers described as funny, helpful with menu suggestions, and in one case personalising dishes for an important date. Reviewers also mention the whiskey flights from different regions. One diner recalls a server asking what half of a bill was when splitting it.

“Spent the day in St. Andrew and stopped in here for lunch. Had Howard as our server who was very helpful with menu suggestions and how to best get back to the train station. Great meal and excellent service!”

“You wouldn't expect this beautiful restaurant is hidden inside the middle of St. Andrews. They have plenty of whiskey options and various flights from the different regions of Scotland. Their food was also delicious. They have plenty of options to choose from including traditional Scottish meals. My wife and I both go the Shepherds Pie and we loved it!”

“Our first visit to Forgans. We had fish and chips for lunch , it was nice but ive had better. They dont advertise but they do offer 20% NHS and bluelight discount, always a bonus. I went with my sister , we decided to split the bill , when server came over our bill was £48 ,told her we are going halves, server asked me what's half of £48 , i thought she was joking but was deadly serious. I did ask was she joking she said no , i apologised if I made her feel embarrassed.”

“Came here for a family lunch today, and everything was absolutely spot on. The food was delicious and came out in a timely manner, the cocktails were amazing, and we had consistently good service throughout the whole meal, which brings me to Sally. Sally was an absolute pleasure to have serving us! Her banter is bloody great! We had so many laughs with her, nothing was too much for her, and she absolutely made our afternoon! Couldn't have asked for a better experience!”
  • Lucia De Rossi
“Had the most excellent experience at forgans. The atmosphere was excellent, the food was nice. We didn’t book (I would recommend) but they managed to find us a table. The waiter James I, was an absolute pleasure. Would come back just for him! He helped us get our table, walked us through the menu and as you see in the picture, he realised it was an important date and had all of our dishes personalised. He was an absolute gem! Thank you James!!”
