About The Eastney Tavern
The Eastney Tavern is a pub in Southsea at 100 Cromwell Rd, set in a wood-panelled building with several separate rooms. Football photos, shirts and memorabilia cover the walls, so the rooms double as a display of local sporting history. The kitchen makes its food in-house rather than serving repacked dishes, and the menu includes liver and bacon alongside rotating specials. Sunday lunch is a roast with a choice of beef, chicken or pork, and a veggie roast sits among two vegetarian options on that menu. Dining tables take up much of the pub, and arriving guests are asked whether they have a reservation. The pub opens daily.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast draws the most praise, with diners singling out the beef, chicken and pork as delicious, home made rather than repacked, and served in good portions, plus a veggie roast described as tasty. Close behind are a tomahawk steak with rich gravy and the liver and bacon, while the beer selection and reasonable pint prices also earn mentions. Many describe friendly, welcoming staff, though two reviewers had the opposite experience. One found a server abrupt and hostile when a dish differed from its menu description, and saw a member of bar staff roll her eyes at a question about baby changing. Another says diners get priority, with a reservation question at the door and dining tables taking over most of the pub, so a drinker found little pub atmosphere. One diner found the special duck's jus too sweet, served with only peas and small potato wedges. Reviewers also mention the football memorabilia filling several rooms and a garden that is a suntrap.

“What a great place. Wood panelled traditional Pub. Great service, great beer and really good food. Good value too. We came for from shelter from the wind during the victorious festival. Had a great Sunday lunch. Spotlessly clean. Really enjoyed ourselves”

“Some places deserve to be packed every night, and Eastney Tavern is one of them. We’ve become regulars for a reason. Every visit reminds us why we keep coming back. The food is consistently outstanding, the portions are generous without being over the top, the prices are genuinely reasonable, and the staff make you feel like they’re actually happy to see you. This tomahawk steak was simply phenomenal—perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned, tender, full of flavour, and served with a rich gravy that deserved every last drop. It wasn’t just a good steak; it was one of those meals that makes the whole table go quiet for a few minutes. What really sets Eastney Tavern apart, though, is the atmosphere. Friendly, welcoming, relaxed and completely unpretentious. It’s increasingly rare to find a local pub that gets absolutely everything right, but somehow they manage it time after time. We’re incredibly lucky to have somewhere this good practically on our doorstep. Places like this are becoming harder to find and honestly should be protected as a national treasure. If there were a Government Department for Outstanding Pubs, Eastney Tavern would be listed immediately. Thank you to everyone there for another brilliant meal. We’ll be back—as always. 🍻🥩”

“Have eaten here quite a lot recently and enjoyed the liver and bacon and other dishes, but the food on this visit (special: Duck with jus) could be much improved. Though the duck itself was good, the jus was rather too sweet and not at all a good match for the duck. Also, for a dinner at this price, I think a nicer selection of vegetables is in order, i.e. beyond simply peas and small potato wedges. I now see that there was a similar comment for this dish about a year ago, so recommend the kitchen takes note.”

“I visit the Eastney Tavern a lot but always forget to leave a review. It is a little gem , with delicious food and always excellent service. They always employ great staff who are friendly and welcoming. The food is always so much nicer than it needs to be for a pub. We have had many family meals there and it never disappoints.”

“Visited one Sunday afternoon for drinks. It's obviously run as a restaurant with diners given priority - you're stopped as soon as you come in and asked if you have a reservation. Reasonable priced beers and friendly staff - two stars for that alone. Don't come here expecting a pub atmosphere. Weekdays and evening may be different, but with all the dining tables taking over most of the pub. The food is rated very well, but this isn't a pub for drinkers. So not really a pub at all.”
