“Ever had such a good experience that you worry that you might sound like you've been sponsored to write the review by the time you've finished heaping praise on the place? That's how I feel right now. My partner and I almost didn't go in, as we had planned on eating at another establishment. However it was full and didn't have the right vibe, so we skipped it and went to plan B. We made the right choice. This will be plan A from here on. We hadn't booked and were quite lucky to get a table as it seemed they had a lot of bookings but were able to squeeze us in. The staff member who seated us had good knowledge of what drinks were available on draught and was extremely helpful, even complementing our choice of food. The wait for each course was reasonable. The food itself was not just the best pub grub I've had, it was some of the best food I've had outside of a Michelin Starred restaurant. The prices seemed a little steep when looking at the menu, but oh boy are those prices justified. Worth every single penny. You really do get what you pay for. The starters we had were indescribably good. Do yourself a favour and get the crispy pork belly bites. I'm almost tempted to knock a star off for the menu not having a larger portion of them as a main. I could quite happily crispy pork belly my way to oblivion. The roast beef was equally excellent, and the portions were amazing. I did not go hungry today. All of the staff we encountered were fantastic. Friendly, welcoming, attentive, and so much more. The atmosphere was just as pleasant, and as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I felt safe there - which is more than I can say for a lot of places in Southampton. It really feels like a hidden gem of Southampton that's not particularly hidden. It's certainly a gem of a place and I will 100% be returning. I'm happy to give my seal of approval to many places that please me, but now I'm thinking I might need a ranking system as this was an S Tier dining experience. I foresee myself and my partner having many happy meals here in the future.”

“My partner and I were looking for a good spot in Southampton for Sunday Lunch and decided to pop into the Duke of Wellington. We were not disappointed - the food and service were both excellent. Despite having not booked, and it clearly being a busy day for them, they were happy to accommodate us. To start, I had the pork belly bites - they were delicious, and I'd return again just for these. To follow, I enjoyed an incredible roast beef. It's hard to do it justice here - but it was undoubtedly one of the best pub Sunday lunches I've had in a long time. The portions were generous; with plenty of beautifully cooked beef and lashings of gravy. The roasties were huge - and cooked to perfection, and the yorkie was delicious. Clearly freshly made, rather than from frozen, which you sadly see in some places. Their claim to have the best roast dinner in Southampton is not without foundation! Considering the quality and quantity - we'd have happily paid a few extra quid above the £18.50 menu price. The pub has a traditional cosy interior, with a front bar area and additional seating in a dining room to the rear. It was clean, comfortable and pretty well-maintained for a 12th century historic building. My only constructive observation here is that the toilet seat in the gents needs to be reattached securely. We found the staff to be fun, friendly and attentive. We could tell that they clearly enjoyed working together from their interactions. When a trainee delivered food to the wrong table and was clearly mortified, we witnessed the manager offering support and encouragement. It's obvious that the great service we experienced doesn't happen by chance. A thoroughly enjoyable experience, and we'll definitely return in the future.”

“Lovely welcoming pub, accommodated 12 for dinner at short notice 30 mins before end of service. Order was taken by Ella, all food ordered came out correct, cooked well and generous portions Gammon, egg and chips was the favourite within the group, the chicken shawarma, pita and salad was lovely. Would recommend”
