About Monkmoor Fish Bar

Ordering at Monkmoor Fish Bar happens at the counter, where customers queue at this fish and chips takeaway on Monkmoor Rd in Shrewsbury. Fish and chips is the order most people place, with cod in batter among the fish and large portions of chips alongside. The counter keeps fish in a warmer, and it can also be cooked to order if you ask, which means a short wait. Beyond the fryer standards, the menu stretches to a Battered Burger and Chips and to kebabs, including chicken kebabs, so a group can order across styles in one stop. Curry sauce is available as a side. The shop works on a walk-in basis, with no reservations, and it opens Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips is what reviewers return to, with several praising the cod as fresh and meaty under a light batter, and one noting the batter stayed crispy because the fish was cooked to order. Chips are called very tasty, portions and value get repeated credit, and one reviewer says the kebabs looked good. Staff are described as warm, friendly and chatty, and delivered food is said to arrive warm, though delivery times can be hit and miss. Criticism is more mixed. One reviewer found the fish dry and the batter limp and doughy, buried under a mountain of chips, with a thin, bland curry sauce. Another says service has slowed over the years. Two reviewers describe the owner or manager treating young staff poorly, including talking down to a new worker. One group of nine reports being sick overnight after a kebab and fish meal, and says nobody answered the phone when they called to complain. Even the middling reviews mention a small wait for fish cooked to order.

“I came here one quiet evening a few months ago, and the food was up to standards but the manager was talking down to a new worker and being passive aggressive and condescending to a poor young female, I found this quite distressing to watch and felt very sorry for the young worker. Do not recommend this place for new workers. A bit of a hostile atmosphere.”

“Love the atmosphere when I arrive the team are all chatty and ask how your day has been and the portions are great and good price also. The fish and chips is amazing”
  • Pete Andrew Jones
“The owner doesn’t treat his young staff very well. He lacks professionalism and conduct. Only seems to care about his money intake not the wellbeing of his employees. 😕😒 Not impressed. …”

“The chips were very tasty and the cod was fresh and meaty with a light batter. Very good. The kebabs also looked good.”
  • Sandy Middleton
“It was around 6:30pm on a Saturday, and I expected a big queue, but there was only one person waiting. There were also just a few pieces of fish sitting in the warmer, which made the place feel a little uninviting. That said, the staff were warm and friendly, which was a real positive. The fish looked great, so I ordered fish and chips with a side of curry sauce. Unfortunately, what should have been the highlight didn’t quite deliver. The fish was completely lost under a mountain of chips — a real case of less is more. While the fish had some flavour, it was quite dry, as if it had been sitting in the warmer for a while. The batter, despite looking crisp, was actually limp and a bit doughy. The curry sauce was also disappointing — the consistency very thin and was lacking much taste. All in all, it felt like a letdown for £13. I’d be interested to see if it’s better during a busier period?”
