Customer Review Summary

Haddock and chips, cooked to order, form the clear draw at this Commonside chippy, with reviewers repeatedly praising the fresh fish, generous portions, and mushy peas, plus a curry sauce most call good though one describes it as different from the traditional version. Staff are called friendly by many, though a few describe blunt or dismissive treatment toward less-regular customers. The chips draw the most recurring criticism, with reviewers describing them as thick, clumsy, or hard on a bad visit, and one long-time customer noting a decline in chip quality and watery mushy peas. Price is another sore point, with reviewers citing a small curry-sauce portion at £8.30 and chips alone reaching four pounds, alongside one separate account of a £12.32 order of stale bread and a frozen-cooked patty sandwich. Even so, several describe returning regularly and eating their fish and chips wrapped at home, finding the fish never sticks to the paper.

“I visit here regularly and I'm yet to have a bad experience. Generous portions unlike some other local chippies, some decent vegan options which are always available, and very friendly service. The curry sauce is a bit different to traditional English chippy curry sauce, but it's still nice.”

“Been a few times over the years. Definitely going down hill a bit. Lovely staff but the chips need some improving and possibly higher quality vinegar, which is not an issue if you are going home. Fish has been good for the most part, mushy peas are slightly watery. Curry sauce is good. Sausages are okay. It just the chips letting it down big time, I get the food because I crave a chippy but it's not a consistent quality of food.”
