About Zurul Malaysian Café
Zurul Malaysian Café builds much of its menu around nasi lemak that guests put together themselves, from a spot on Glossop Road in Sheffield. Coconut steamed rice comes as a bowl or a box, with sides chosen from options such as sambal prawn, beef or chicken rendang, chicken satay, sambal tofu, egg and small fried fish, and the plate arrives with anchovies, sliced cucumber, peanuts and sambal chilli gravy. Roti canai and prawn noodles, fried or soupy, fill out the rest of the kitchen, and vegetarians have tofu sambal to order. The food is halal and the business is family-run. Teh tarik heads the hot and iced drinks. Tables run on a walk-in basis rather than by reservation, and orders can be packed for takeaway if you are eating off site. A step-free entrance keeps the room reachable for visitors with mobility needs. The café opens Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary
Nasi lemak is what reviewers return to most, served as a coconut rice plate with sambal prawn, chicken or beef rendang, chicken satay, tofu sambal and sides like boiled egg and anchovies. Diners call the flavours authentic, and several Malaysians and former residents say it matches the food they know. Roti canai and apam balik come up close behind, with teh tarik and iced bandung as the drinks mentioned, one reviewer calling the bandung light, sweet and refreshing. Prawn noodles, fried rice and char koey teow also appear, and the customisable rice box is one regular's go-to. Reviewers describe generous portions and good value, with friendly, family-run service. The main criticisms are small: one wanted spicier sambal options, and another felt the rice portion could have been bigger. Several describe the owner going out of her way, from making kuih ketayap that was not on the menu to adding a complimentary slice of cake to a takeaway order.

“Stumbled upon this place while visiting Sheffield and had an amazing meal! As a Malaysian, I think the nasi lemak (“rice bowls”) with chicken rendang and chicken satay was incredible. The rendang was slightly different to the rendang I am used to but still really flavourful, satay perfectly grilled and tender. My partner had it with tofu sambal and prawn sambal and they were just as good. If you love a bit of heat, they definitely deliver a kick. We also liked the apam balik. Authentic flavours overall, would definitely come back.”

“I’ve been here so many times, it’s one of my favourite places in Sheffield. The food is amazing, so flavoursome and at a great price. The veggie options are great and there’s a delicious range of unique iced and hot drinks. My go-to is the rice box as it’s so customisable and always delicious. The roti is also unbelievably tasty. I can’t recommend Zurul enough!!”

“I think I left Sheffield and got transported back to Singapore. The roti canai was amazing as was the Teh Tarek. Everything I ate was authentic Malaysian or Singaporean”
