About Neptune Fish & Chips

Neptune Fish & Chips is a fish and chips takeaway in Sheffield at 989 Ecclesall Rd, with a gluten free menu cooked in a separate kitchen. That menu includes gluten free chips, cod and curry sauce, so customers who need gluten free food can order the same kind of meal as everyone else. The main menu centres on battered cod or haddock served with chips and mushy peas. Battered sausage and fishcake are also served in butties. Pies and deep fried halloumi sit alongside them, and there is a meat free menu with some Greek dishes. Card payments are taken. The shop opens Tuesday to Saturday and closes on Sundays and Mondays.

Customer Review Summary

Gluten free fish and chips draw the most praise, with reviewers describing a separate kitchen, gluten free chips with curry sauce, and gluten free cod roe. One coeliac reviewer says a partner travelled miles for it, and another calls it the best gluten free fish and chips they have had in Sheffield. Close behind, reviewers single out crispy batter and chips, a chip butty and a fish cake butty, cheese pies, deep fried halloumi, pukka pies and a meat free menu. Several describe friendly staff and a clean shop, and one calls the curry sauce among the better ones tried. The batter is the recurring complaint. One diner found the thick, soggy batter on two fish ruined the meal, and another found the battered sausage tasteless, the fishcake without any fish inside and the curry sauce vile, so the food ended up in the bin. One reviewer also found the price steep. Another reviewer was given an extra meal free after some food was overcooked.

“I'm going to be totally honest here guys, I just don't get it, the reviews. The food. Eh!!! I may have gone on a bad night, must have, because the food was not edible. The battered sausage was tasteless, how is that even possible, seriously it was tasteless. The batter on the sausage was a bit weird, not what I would call traditional batter. And I got a fishcake too. Well that's what I ordered. I deconstructed the 'fishcake', and, well, I haven't a clue what it was. It had very thick crispy hard batter on the outside, soggy batter on the inside, and the rest I don't know what it was, but I can say, definitely no fish inside. And don't even get me started on the curry sauce. YUK.. I dipped my battered sausage in the curry and my wife said I looked like a bulldog chewing a wasp. Basically we just wanted a quick snack to share between me and my wife, half each, before going in the pub. But we binned it in the public bin. It was vile. I/we would have scored it 0-zero stars, but, on the positive, it's a nice clean chippy and the staff are friendly.”
