About The Northern Perk

At the Herries Road entrance of the Northern General Hospital, The Northern Perk is a coffee shop serving staff, patients and visitors passing through. The counter runs bacon and sausage sandwiches alongside sausage rolls and cake, with toasted tea cakes served with butter for those wanting something simpler. Coffee covers lattes and flat whites, and tea and hot chocolate are also on offer. Orders are taken at the counter on a walk-in basis, with no need to book ahead. A small amount of seating is available for eating in, though it can feel tight when a few tables are taken at once. The entrance is step-free and wheelchair accessible, useful given its position at the hospital gate. It opens daytime hours Monday to Friday and stays closed at weekends.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the coffee, with a bacon sandwich and flat white singled out as hitting the spot, alongside a hot chocolate one diner called the best in years. Toasted tea cakes with proper butter, scrambled egg, ham sandwich and cake also earn praise, and many describe friendly staff and a clean, comfortable room used by people attending hospital appointments. Prices are the recurring complaint. Several call it expensive, citing a cold premade sausage roll, cake and ordinary tea costing over a small handful of pounds, and one found the latte bland with no coffee taste. Food misses include a burnt, dry sausage in a sandwich and a bacon roll whose grease soaked through the foil into the bread. A few say staff chat among themselves and ignore other customers, while others dispute that. One reviewer also reports that a table by the entrance can block access. Another says the space feels cramped. One diner closes on a staff member who sings beautifully while serving.

“Situated near Herries Road entrance of the northern General Hospital. The place looks a bit small on the outside but on the inside it’s quite big it’s like a tardis decent interior nice selection of food. Bit of a rip off a slice of home-made chocolate mint aero bake. for £4.50 tho. However, it was nice. Understandable as it’s expensive in Sheffield for the council tax and electricity bills etc. So the prices are understandable.”
