Customer Review Summary
Fresh fish is the draw, with reviewers praising cod and haddock in a thin, crisp, light batter, and chips they call perfect or outstanding. Several mention friendly service, and one notes unlimited chips for the very hungry. Diners like seasoning their own salt and vinegar, and one found the fish moist and actually tasting of fish, though that same reviewer thought it a bit too oily. Complaints centre on value, consistency and the upstairs room. One felt a small fish and chips with curry sauce was expensive, and another said two portions of fish and chips cost more than they would pay elsewhere. One found the kitchen had run out of mushy peas and lemon by lunchtime, and another said the canteen-style room lacked atmosphere, with no background music and conversation at a whisper. One long-time customer said the last four orders of chips were burnt, greasy chunks and that staff rarely smiled. One reviewer cautions that eating in means managing steps, and mentions benches out front for takeaway. One couple sharing a single portion upstairs were brought a spare plate without asking.

“Chips were nice. The fish was eatable. At 12h30 they had run out of mushy peas and run out of lemon. Because the restaurant was very busy and pack with people?? No not really. Payed £14 for small fish and chips and curry sauce. The dinning area and tables all dirty and sticky. The attendant come with my serving putted the plate on the table and I had to ask her if she could clean the table, otherwise she would. The toilet was absolutely disgraceful. With number two marks on several spots. No hand soap to wash hands and no paper towels. Not for me.”

“Great little find, checked reviews before popping in, had a small cod and chips eat in with a water, all in it was £12:20, I think ok in this climate! Very polite young lady on her own serving and bought it up to me on the first floor seating area, help yourself to sauces etc! Solid 8/10 would come again, my only petty gripe was could’ve done with a bigger plate as con on top of chips”

“I have on a number of occasions tried to be served here. I am a wheelchair user and as such cannot access the shop. I have gained staff attention and asked them to come down to me in fish row and serve me and take my order, paying cash. Every time they have refused to do so. YHIS IS EXTRA BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND IS DISCRIMINATORY. Previous owners have never had a problem but the current staff are appalling. They are saying that if you are in a wheelchair or ambulatory but can’t make the steps that we Stobys chip shop, do not want your custom. This makes me very angry.”

“The last four times I have had chips from here they are disgusting. They used to be good once upon a time. The chips are just little burnt chunks of yuk and grease. The service is not much better don't think I have ever seen anyone smile.”

“I am not easily pleased and very much judge a fish and chip shop. My partner and I ordered 1 fish and chips to eat upstairs. We were going to share but didnt mention this. They bought us a spare plate to share. The chips were perfect, the fish was moist and actually tasted like fish when im some places it tastes like air. The batter is thin, crispy and tasted fresh. I'd say a bit too much oil, but the fact we could do our own salt and vinegar exactly how we wanted... perfect. Really impressed by this place.”
