About Porthmeor Beach Cafe

Porthmeor Beach Cafe is a restaurant and bar on Porthmeor Beach in Saint Ives, set right beside the sand with views across the bay. The space includes a covered terrace and a row of pods that seat groups of up to seven in their own enclosed setting. The kitchen runs a tapas-style menu built around small plates such as whole mackerel, prawns, spider crab croquettes and churros, with bread, potatoes and halloumi rounding out the selection. A bar sits alongside the food offering. Dogs are welcome at the cafe, and tables by the window are reserved by booking, with the rest of the room open to walk-ins through the rest of the service. Lemon meringue pie appears on the daytime menu alongside the tapas list.

Customer Review Summary

Diners consistently single out the beachfront setting as the headline draw, repeatedly pointing to the view and the covered terrace or pods overlooking the sand. Close behind sits the food, which most describe as freshly cooked and local; whole mackerel, salmon rillettes, halloumi and churros draw specific praise, as do the spider crab croquettes, while a seafood-focused visitor found the fresh catch "cooked really well." A handful, however, call the cooking inconsistent: seared king prawns read as oily and under-seared, scallops were buried under a sweet chorizo jam, and tenderstem broccoli was over-spiced and raw at the stem, leaving one diner to advise seafood lovers to skip it. Portion size relative to price is another recurring knock, especially from tapas-minded tables, and one parent found the kids menu thin at two nuggets per child. A French-language takeout reviewer also reports an automatic tip added without consent at the counter. Service draws warmth from most, who describe the staff as friendly and attentive, though one visit was marred by a server who ignored the table and ignored a request to serve sauces on the side. Several suggest booking ahead for a window table.

“Delicious Food Amazing view and amazing food! I ordered a few different dishes and every single one was delicious. Great atmosphere and a lovely place to spend some time. Definitely worth the time and money. Would happily visit again!”

“The ambience is amazing, being right next to the beach! The pods offer a good amount of privacy too. The food is what let the experience down. In most of our dishes, the main item (seafood, especially) was masked by the garnishes or sauces. The ‘seared’ king prawns tasted barely seared if at all; they were swimming in oil, and were far too oily to enjoy. The seared scallops were confusingly accompanied by a chorizo jam. The jam itself was too sweet, but why would you pair scallops with a jam in the first place, when scallops are loved for their natural sweetness? We could barely taste the scallop. The tenderstem broccoli was over-spiced — covered in heaps of zaatar — and undercooked — the stem still tasted a bit raw. The best dish we had was the spider crab croquettes, which still tasted of crab. Overall, we came hoping for a taste of delicious fresh seafood, and left with that craving unsatisfied. Seafood lovers should give it a miss.”

“Adults food was fine, we got quite a lot across the menu across the 6 eating adults. But the kids menu a bit basic - 2 chicken nuggets per child is beyond tight. Not very accommodating when asking if any possibility of straying from menu for the kids either. Atmosphere nice but that’s the setting not the restaurant.”

“This place has by far my favorite place to dine in the uk! Truly magical ambience and the hosts were super super friendly and warm! Emily truly made our experience here wholesome and hosted us with the best energy we could have imagined. She not only recommended the best dishes, but also followed up on how we were feeling through our meals and after! This cafe is good hands, and thank you Emily for making this best experience for my partner and I”
