About Grantley Arms
In Grantley village near Ripon, next to the Grantley Hall estate, the Grantley Arms is a village pub with a real fire at the heart of a traditional interior lit by candles and twinkly lights. Dogs come in and settle by the hearth, so walkers and their companions have somewhere to stop. The kitchen keeps the menu short rather than extensive, with sourdough bread to start, fish and chips with tartare sauce and chicken supreme served with fries, and trifle to finish. Sunday lunch is served, and the pub opens daily as a restaurant and bar as well. Booking in advance is the norm here, though walk-ins are sometimes accommodated. A garden sits at the rear, and a discretionary service charge is added to the bill.

Customer Review Summary
The food draws the strongest praise, with one diner detailing fish and chips in crisp batter, chips soft in the centre and tartar sauce called divine, plus a sourdough starter to begin; another suggests sampling the trifle for anyone with room for dessert. Close behind is the setting, described as beautifully decorated, traditional and dog friendly, with a seat by the real fire, candles and twinkly lights making it cosy and warm. Sunday lunch comes up more than once as relaxed and unrushed, and several say they would book in advance. Service divides opinion, though. Two visitors describe a long wait before an order was taken, tables seated later being served first, forgotten drinks, plates put down without anyone checking who had ordered what, and a chicken supreme with fries that felt an odd pairing against the pricing. Another, otherwise delighted, notes a discretionary service charge and a wait for salt that ended with the couple at the next table passing theirs over.

“Having enjoyed many excellent experiences at the hotel, I was looking forward to lunch at the Grantley Arms. Unfortunately, the experience fell well short of expectations. …”

“Our visit was unfortunately disappointing, especially considering the pricing, which aligns with the partner venue at Grantley Hall but not the level of service we experienced. On arrival, we waited at the entrance for several minutes while the manager and a member of staff continued their conversation before acknowledging us. We were early and happy to sit at the bar, but it became clear that several empty tables — including the one we were eventually given — had been available the entire time. It felt unnecessarily awkward. Service throughout the evening was slow and inconsistent. It took around 20 minutes for anyone to take our order, during which time multiple tables seated after us were served first. Our drinks were also forgotten and only arrived after we reminded staff ten minutes later. When the food arrived, the plates were placed down abruptly without any introduction or checking who had ordered what. We ended up passing hot dishes across a small table, which didn’t reflect the standard we expected. The chicken supreme itself wasn’t particularly enjoyable, and serving it with fries felt like an odd pairing. What stood out most was the lack of attentiveness. No one checked on our mains, offered sauces, or ensured we were happy with the dishes. After finishing, our plates remained on the table for around 15 minutes, and with no staff approaching, we decided against ordering dessert and paid at the bar instead. Overall, the experience didn’t match the premium pricing. The service fell short of the expectations set by the Grantley name.”

“Brilliant food, excellent service and lively atmosphere for Sunday lunch. Special mention to our waiter Jack who couldn’t have done more for us, made our Sunday lunch feel like a special occasion. Already booked to come back.”

“Ended up at the Grantley Arms pub after a long walk with our German Shepherd. Sat in the garden at the rear of the pub. Unsure if we'd stay for food as our dog can be nervous when approached by strangers. Special mention to Liam for making …”
