About King Wok
King Wok is a family-run Chinese takeaway in Reading, found at 21 High St. It opens in the evenings only, Tuesday to Saturday, and closes on Mondays and Sundays. Food is made fresh to order. The menu includes Aubergine in Hot Bean Sauce and Classic Spring Rolls, with salt and pepper chicken among the other dishes. Orders are collected from a counter inside the restaurant, where customers can wait for their food. Friday and Saturday are the busiest nights, and a wait for food is usual then.

Customer Review Summary
Fresh food made to order is what reviewers return to King Wok for, with the classic spring rolls and a hot bean sauce dish singled out by one reviewer whose partner now requests them every few weeks. Others praise the piping hot, delicious takeaways and an immense portion size, and one customer of over a decade says the quality has only improved. The recurring complaint is waiting. Reviewers describe being quoted a time and still standing in the restaurant for a further stretch, with Fridays and Saturdays the busiest, and several suggest pre-ordering the day before or at lunchtime. One regular says a drink or prawn crackers should be offered when orders run late, and another feels the prices now match a sit-down restaurant. A dissenting reviewer found the salt and pepper chicken soggy, the egg fried rice bland, and the chow mein coated in a sweet sauce. One parent ordered dinner for a daughter who had to leave for work before it was ready.

“Top-notch stuff. Been going to King Wok for over a decade now and the quality has only improved. Food, impeccable. Portion size, immense. Flavour, Michelin. Been recommending King Wok to friends and family members and they very much agree. Got to know the owner over the years and our friendship has only floruished. His son (Alec) has been helping out recently so I assume he will be taking over the family business in the near future. Really high hopes for the lad. Promising youth.”

“Used to be terrific, great food at reasonable prices. Now the food is still good but you’re paying sit-down restaurant prices for a local takeaway. What used to cost about £12 is now £20. And you can wait half an hour for your food despite the time they give you. This is my last visit. 😕”

“This is one of the few Chinese takeaways I've been to across England that seem to make the food fresh to order, best I've been to south of London so far.”

“Really don’t understand the reviews on here seems odd. Every dish we had was like it was cooked by someone at home didn’t have that takeaway taste to it at all. Firstly The salt & pepper chicken had no onions, chillies, peppers or carrots, just literally soggy fried chicken with seasoning. Egg fried rice was bland. The chow mein had some weird sweet sauce on it, and the curry again was pretty bland with no mushrooms which was a first. Very disappointing and there’s Far better in the area. This place needs to up their game.”
