About Pierreponts Café
Pierreponts Café is a cafe on High St in Reading, with a small room inside. The kitchen makes shakshuka with a thick tomato sauce, and homemade cakes sit on display to order alongside loose-leaf tea served in a pot. Cooked breakfast is on the menu, including an English breakfast, and sandwiches and baguettes come with crisps on the side. The kitchen stops serving sandwiches at 3pm, before the café itself closes. The café gets busy at peak times. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Shakshuka draws the most repeat praise, with a rich, thick tomato sauce and just the right spice, and one reviewer calls it one of the best they have had. Breakfast comes close behind: French toast with vanilla, caramelised bananas and bacon, smoked salmon with light, fluffy scrambled eggs, and an English breakfast with particularly delicious fried bread. Others come for fresh, filling sandwiches with crisps, a tart with salad, and tea and cake, with the tea served in a pot with loose leaf. One diner who is dairy and gluten free reports finding something delicious on every visit. Several mention friendly service and a busy terrace, and a couple say booking is worthwhile because it gets busy. The criticism is specific. One reviewer received a lukewarm, weak chai latte with undissolved powder floating on top and called it overpriced, and another found the tone of the person serving their group uncivil. Two motorcyclists who arrived a minute before the kitchen closed were refused sandwiches, having checked beforehand that the cafe was open until 5pm.

“Had a lovely walk around the village and a stop off here for a Tea and some cake. Yummy! Really nice time spent to round off the trip.”

“Our tea and cake was lovely. Less welcome was the tone we received from the person who served us, maybe the manager. Perhaps something about our group offended her, or it was the end of a tough day. But no reason to be uncivil.”

“Me and my wife checked before leaving that the cafe was open until 5pm, we rode our motorbikes for an hour to get there at 2:59 - as I waited in the queue the serving lady took the sandwich menu in -I asked if we could “sneak in 2 sandwiches” as I was next in the q at the time she removed the sign, to which she simply said “No, the kitchen shuts at 3pm”. We won’t be coming back.”

“We often come for the delicious breakfast, but today we were cycling by and paused for a take away lunch to sit by the river with. We were served with a smile, the food was fantastic and the coffee was great too. Never had a bad experience here in over 10 years of visiting.”

“£4.70 for that? Absolutely not. I honestly don’t know how you get a chai latte this wrong. I paid £4.70 for what was essentially a cup of lukewarm water with a tiny splash of milk. It was barely milky, wasn’t properly stirred, and there was a layer of undissolved chai powder/grit floating all over the top and settled around the bottom. The photos really do tell the story, it tasted as unappetising as it looked. For £4.70, I expected a proper, hot, milky chai latte. Instead, it was like drinking warm, weak milky water with bits in it. Absolutely dreadful and massively overpriced. I’m normally reluctant to leave negative reviews, but this was genuinely one of the worst hot drinks I’ve ever been served. Had I not been on my way to an appointment in London, I would have taken it back and requested a refund. Additionally there were flies on the cakes as they did not have fly nets over them. I would highly recommend the owner invests in these for hygiene reasons.”
