Quick info
About The White Hart
The White Hart is a country food restaurant on Stopham Rd in Pulborough, a pub turned Indian restaurant beside an old stone bridge over the river Arun. A decked area overlooks the river, which gives the building a waterside setting. The menu is small and centres on curries, including lamb pathia and chicken tikka masala, with pub classics served alongside, such as a grilled chicken naanwich. Sauces are homemade and come with the food. The pub changed hands and now runs as both a pub and an Indian restaurant. The car park by the pub is shared with river users such as kayakers and paddle boarders.

Customer Review Summary
Curries are the main draw, and reviewers who mention the recent change of hands describe a pub now leaning toward Indian food. Diners single out a lamb pathia and a chicken tikka masala as lovely, a takeaway curry called the best in years, and homemade sauces that complemented the food. Close behind are the grilled chicken naanwich, the chicken shish and the burger, which one table called great. Staff and the owner come across as friendly and welcoming, and the riverside setting by the old stone bridge, including the outdoor area, earns repeated praise. The complaints are about consistency. One reviewer found the burger small, and another found the crayfish risotto much smaller than the burger. Several feel the interior needs a freshen-up. One diner waited a long time after a burger was missed when the order was entered, and one left unfinished drinks after finding the pub empty on a Sunday lunchtime. The missed burger was re-ordered with the extra bacon and cheese added free.

“We won’t be returning, the best tip I read on Tripadvisor after our visit was to go somewhere else. Its current Google star rating of 4.4 must be based on the previous owners and is misleading. On Tripadvisor it scores 3.7, which is likely to reduce. Despite its lovely location, it was empty when we arrived at 1:00pm on a Sunday. We left without finishing our drinks.”

“Stopped at the White Hart for a lunchtime drink after a walk with friends and we then decided to have something to eat as well. We were the only people in the pub at the time and so the barman had to call up the chef to be available to prepare our food. This was no trouble to them and the food arrived in very good time. We had the grilled chicken naanwich, burger/chips, and the chicken shish. All of us said the food was amazing. The customer service was also first class, nothing too much trouble. We know this pub has changed hands recently and is now aiming at being a pub/Indian restaurant. It still needs a bit of updating inside and out, but If our experience is anything to go by it will be a success. Give it a try!”

“Service was top-notch and the food was great throughout. We were served by Jas who looked a little young for the role at first, but he quickly proved me wrong with his enthusiasm and politeness. I had the curry, which was really tasty, and my girlfriend had a burger. It was a little small, though that was to be expected given the price, a slightly bigger burger at a slightly higher price would strike the right balance. The outside scenery was lovely, though the interior could do with a bit of a freshen-up.”

“Ordered a curry takeaway 2 weeks ago. Can honestly say it was the BEST takeaway we have had in years! The food was delicious, the staff were so friendly and the owner was extremely welcoming. We did feel sorry for the kitchen staff, cooking in the very hot weather and appreciated their excellent skills in producing such tasty food. Am going again this week, can honestly recommend the food, the staff and the ambience, therefore 5 stars, would give more if that were possible. Thanks to all at The White Hart for such a tremendous service”

Overall, The White Hart is a fantastic pub with great food, excellent service, and a pleasant atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area and look forward to returning.”
