About Ship Anson
Ship Anson is a pub at 10 The Hard in Portsmouth, with naval history on the walls and throughout the building. Royal Navy personnel drink here alongside locals and visitors, particularly when a Navy ship is in harbour. Real ales are on tap and come in an old-fashioned pint pot. The kitchen serves a full English breakfast and a Sunday roast, so the pub works for a morning meal as well as a pint. Live sport from Sky and TNT Sports plays on the TVs in the bar. The pub stands opposite Portsmouth Harbour station, with a bus stop across the road.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers come above all for the naval and maritime history, with naval memorabilia on the walls and a crowd of locals, Royal Navy personnel and visitors that gets busier when a Navy ship is in harbour. Close behind is the real ale, served in an old fashioned pint pot, with one drinker singling out Pompey Glory. Food earns steady praise too, especially the Sunday roast and the traditional Full English breakfast, which one diner says arrived quickly alongside coffee and orange juice. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, though one reviewer notes they are at times run ragged. Outdoor seating gets a mention for its view of HMS Warrior, and one reviewer says evenings turn livelier and rowdier, with weekend karaoke and children asked to leave around seven. The main complaint comes from a wheelchair user who could not move around in the chair or reach the toilets, and who found the ordering app showing dishes as sold out while diners who had ordered at the bar were being served those same dishes.

“Great Breakfast and the cure for my fragile head this last Sunday Morning! (28/06/26). Once again, a big thanks to the staff at the Ship Anson who were so friendly and were efficient at serving me a Full English Breakfast Coffee and an Orange Juice all in super quick time with fresh ingredients and a smile. This totally set me up for the day - thanks Team.”

“This is a great pub with a lot of Naval History! Great food and staff and can get busy at times with Navy servicemen and women, especially if a Navy ship is in harbour, ours and others!! Also does great real ale!!”

“The barkeep was the nicest I have ever conversed with. Even though the bar was quite busy I did not feel rushed to order. The food was good, very reasonably priced for an appetizer and entree, and the atmosphere of the place for someone who likes military history is unparalleled. If you are visiting the dockyard I would recommend this as a go-to.”

“A proper maritime pub down by Portsmouth Harbour. It has plenty of real ales on tap, I had the very drinkable 'Pompey Glory'. It has a lively atmosphere and lots of naval history on the walls. The service was friendly too, it's definitely one to visit when you're in Portsmouth.”
