About TJ's Restaurant

Set on a balcony terrace overlooking Paignton harbour, TJ's Restaurant is a small, family-run Mediterranean restaurant on Cliff Road that pairs sea views with a seafood-leaning menu of pork dishes and other plates from the region. Service is by table, with the waitstaff taking orders and a wine list to accompany the food. Reservations are required. The room runs as a restaurant and bar, and the setting puts the harbour directly in the line of sight from the dining area.

Customer Review Summary

Reviews split sharply, with the most praise centered on the seafood and the balcony view over Paignton harbour. Several diners describe the food as very special and the staff as friendly, singling out dishes like the seafood plate and the pork. Other reviewers report a poor experience, citing unavailable menu items, small portions, a hair found in a starter, and rushed service from one waiter.

“I'm not sure what's changed in the 2 years since we last visited, but nothing was right tonight. The food was poor and service lacking. I was going to give it a three star, but the definition of that was "good" and it really wasn't. I'm sorry for not having rated this when we came before and it was excellent, but we were just so surprised by tonight, it's prompted me to review.”

“Not a restaurant I will return to unfortunately. There were far too many things not available, no alcohol free larger, two starters, two desserts all off the menu. The food was ok, mains portion sizes weren't great, for the sake of a tablespoon of mushy peas it's probably not worth bothering. There was a hair on my starter, which I didn't flag with the staff as I moved it off and still had it, I know mistakes can happen but it just added to the list. Two of the mains were missing the tartar sauce, we had to sit looking at the mains whilst we waited for new cutlery. One of the waiters didn't even let us finish ordering drinks before rushing off. I asked for a straw that I never got. Music on the terrace would really help with some kind of ambience. Overall, with so many small issues just adding up over the evening, it's just not somewhere I would choose to go again.”

“Food is very special here. We had an excellent sea food dish out first evening and the pork the next day. Both fantastic. Service couldn't have been better and this is on top of the fantastic view over the harbour while you're there.”
