About Shoreline
Shoreline is a British restaurant on Eastern Esplanade in Paignton, set on the seafront with a balcony overlooking the bay and beach. The all-day format moves from breakfast through brunch and into lunch and dinner, with poached eggs on the morning menu and pizza alongside the main British dishes later on. A focaccia and a gluten-free ham and salad sandwich are among the options, with gluten-free and lactose-free choices catered for across the menu. Table service is provided inside, while the balcony offers outside seating with views, and dogs are welcome. A wait at the door has been reported at busier times. Breakfast finishes before noon.

Customer Review Summary
The single most consistent thread across recent reviews is a sharp decline in service and food standards at what was once a regular favourite. Several long-time patrons describe staff disappearing after the meal is served, no check-backs, tables uncleared, and difficulty getting the bill, with one diner reporting they were told to pay upfront before eating and feeling uncomfortable when staff later pointed at their table. Food complaints name specific items: a floppy, undercooked pizza that arrived without cutlery, and breakfast service cut off before noon. A few reviewers mention undercooked or tasteless dishes and slow order-taking.

“We have eaten here many times over the years, which makes it particularly disappointing to say that the standard of service has noticeably declined over the last couple of years. The food itself is generally fine, but the service has become almost non-existent. Once your meal has been brought to the table, staff seem to disappear. Nobody comes back to check whether everything is okay, asks whether you would like another drink, clears the table promptly or offers a dessert menu. On previous visits we have sat for a considerable amount of time after finishing our meal without anyone approaching us, and have eventually had to get up and find a member of staff simply to ask for the bill. Even getting another drink during the meal can mean leaving the table to find someone because attempts to catch a member of staff's attention go unnoticed while staff are chatting elsewhere. We visited again today because it was nearby and convenient after being on the beach with children. This time we were told that we were expected to pay for our meals upfront because this is apparently a new policy following a number of customers leaving without paying. I wasn't comfortable with this and declined. This is a sit-down restaurant, not a takeaway or counter-service establishment. When dining in a restaurant, I expect to receive the meal and service before settling the final bill. We may want additional drinks or desserts, there may be an issue with the food, and I also prefer to decide whether to leave a tip based upon the service we have actually received. What concerned me further was seeing members of staff subsequently talking and pointing towards our table. That felt unnecessary and uncomfortable. I completely understand that customers leaving without paying is a serious problem for any business. However, given our experiences here over several visits, I can't help wondering whether the lack of attention to occupied tables is contributing to the problem. If customers can finish their meals, sit waiting for a significant length of time and eventually leave without staff noticing, then surely improving table service and monitoring would be a better solution than asking genuine diners to pay before they have even eaten. This used to be somewhere we were happy to return to, which is why the decline is such a shame. Good restaurant service doesn't require staff hovering over diners, but it should include checking the meal is okay, noticing when drinks are empty, clearing finished plates, offering desserts and allowing customers to pay without having to hunt for someone. Unfortunately, after several similar experiences and now the introduction of upfront payment, I think the restaurant really needs to look at the level of service being provided rather than placing the consequences of poor table monitoring onto its customers.”

“Gluten and lactose free options available and well catered for 👍🏼 The photo doesn't do the food justice. Pictured is the gluten free ham and salad sandwich. For a gluten free option this was really good and fairly priced (£9.50 approx). The kids sandwich meal was really generous and the other adults who had focaccia commented on how amazing it was. The restaurant is really pleasant inside with great views whether you sit inside or out on the balcony. We would eat here again.”

“No breakfasts after 11.55am here! Real shame as they do good poached eggs. They used to have the best pizza in town, which I would tell people about, but last week I was served the most horrible pizza I've EVER seen or tasted!! It was floppy, wholly uncooked, absolutely inedible for me (tho my friend ate some of it as she was famished!). How that could even be thought okay to go out to a table is beyond me!! I was so embarrassed to have recommended it to my friend! Never again. Such a shame, as they really were the best for ages, but not now. A vague sorry from the owner was all that was forthcoming.”

“Changing my review from what used to be 5 stars. Since the manageress and other staff members left, Shoreline has unfortunately declined. The customer service is now awful, the food really bad, and the fun atmosphere has gone. This place used to be a Saturday favourite, I'll never come back after the way the place is now run. In response to the owner replying that it must be lovely to be perfect all the time...well, I certainly wouldn't have customers standing at the door for 10 minutes, I wouldn't have them sat at a table waiting half an hour before taking their order, I wouldn't serve them food without cutlery, I wouldn't serve them with a miserable attitude, I wouldn't serve them undercooked tasteless food, and I certainly wouldn't throw my attitude around when somebody is pointing out critical failures on your business! You had just 4 tables that last evening I was there, 2 of which had to walk out before even ordering anything thanks to the attitude from your staff! You failed to serve people while you were carrying on chatting amongst yourselves at the bar ignoring everybody! My review is fully reinforced by the attitude of your reply. It's sad to see the place go this way as I've had great breakfasts here weekly. No more now.”

“We found this place through a quick google of Gluten free restaurants locally when we were on holiday last week. Our youngest daughter has coeliacs. Always initially a bit cautious due to cross contamination etc but they were so friendly, and welcoming and said what they absolutely could do GF etc. the owner came out to us and let the children use a pair of binoculars and explained some of the ships in the bay. Kind, attentive staff and the food was delicious. Thank you for such a positive experience!”
