About Cagney's Cafe

Cooked breakfasts anchor the menu at Cagney's Cafe, a cafe on Upper Barr in Oxford, where the Cagney's Classic brings together bacon, egg, sausage, hash brown and beans for anyone after a full plate to start the day. A full English sits alongside it, with tomatoes and mushrooms on the plate. The rest of the day is covered by sandwiches made to order and paninis, while coffee, including flat whites, tea and hot chocolate fill out the drinks, and coffee can be taken away for those not stopping to sit in. The cafe has been refurbished, with modern seating areas throughout. Tables outside suit customers who would rather eat in the open air, and high chairs mean families with young children can settle in. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance keeps the room reachable for visitors with mobility needs. No booking is taken, so you arrive and order at the counter, and the doors open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast is what brings people back, with the Cagney's Classic drawing the most detailed praise for its bacon struck between soft and firm, the burst of yolk, juicy sausages, hash brown and beans, and several others calling the full English their go to for its portion size and quick arrival. Close behind is the welcome, described repeatedly as friendly and warm, alongside a room reviewers say has looked brighter and more modern since its refurbishment. One recommends the Turkish breakfast, singling out the menemen, and another notes fresh cakes for sale. The drinks divide opinion: one reviewer calls the coffee the best, while another found a flat white tasted like hot milk, and a third rates the hot chocolate as standard rather than the best. One would prefer teapots or large mugs over the small glasses, which cool too quickly, and one mentions loud customers lingering inside and outside. One arriving late describes a sandwich made to order even as the kitchen wound down.

“There was lots to love here today. Firstly, and for reasons outside the scope of this review, I was miserable before I walked in, having been caught in the rain twice on my motorbike en-route to Oxford. Within seconds of walking in, that was changed by the upbeat and welcoming nature of the host, who despite towards the end of their working day, did not demonstrate the exhaustion or fatigue you might find in similar establishments... their energy for their place of work was exemplary. I enjoyed a great cup of tea, and a sandwich made to order, despite the fact that, at least to appearance, the kitchen was winding down for the day... not a problem! I'd like to have spent more time here, and if I was local, I would surely make a regular stop, as I was told, many local families and friends do Well done, guys. First rate.”
