About Blacksmiths Arms
Blacksmiths Arms is a pub and restaurant on Black Horse Ln in Northallerton, with a stone floor and wood beams and a menu running to 107 dishes. Starters take in a Classic Prawn Cocktail and Bang Bang Shrimp, and the kitchen also serves a Parmo alongside its seasonal pub grub. Customer Review Summary
Diners repeatedly single out the sticky belly pork, with one calling it the best they'd ever tasted, alongside a parmo described as "to die for" and a steak cooked as requested. Several also mention starters that kept them going before mains, and one reviewer praised the milkshake alongside "very very good service." The open fire and cosy, rustic interior draw consistent warmth from visitors, and staff are repeatedly described as welcoming, with accommodations noted for vegetarian and gluten free diners as well as young children and elderly guests. The outdoor space and nearby reservoir walk also get a mention as a draw for families. On the negative side, one reviewer reports noticing dead flies and wasps on the windowsill during a lunch visit, and another flags a new mandatory 10% service charge for groups of eight or more as an "odd decision" despite otherwise praising the food. Parking is noted as tight when the pub gets busy, though tables have still been found quickly even on crowded days.

“⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding from start to finish Absolutely superb experience at The Blacksmiths Arms in Swainby — one of those rare places that gets everything right. From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed by a real open fire glowing away, giving the pub that proper North Yorkshire, cosy countryside atmosphere. Warm, relaxed, and full of character — exactly what a traditional pub should feel like. The food was exceptional. Every dish was beautifully presented, generous in portion, and absolutely spot on for flavour. Clearly cooked with care using quality ingredients — this isn’t just “pub food”, it’s food done properly. Desserts were just as impressive and finished the meal perfectly. Service was first-class — friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without being overbearing. You’re made to feel relaxed and looked after, which makes such a difference. The atmosphere ties it all together: crackling fire, rustic surroundings, great company, and a real sense of warmth and comfort. Whether you’re stopping in after a walk or going out for a special meal, it’s the kind of place you instantly want to return to. An absolute gem of a pub and easily one of the best dining experiences in the area. Highly recommended — we’ll definitely be back. 👌🔥🍽️”
