About The Lock
The Lock is an English restaurant and bar in North Shields, on Albert Edward Dock at Royal Quays Marina. Window tables overlook the yachts, and the decor carries seafaring references throughout the room. The menu runs from coffee and cake to tapas and full meals, with fish & chips and pizzas among the mains and a wine selection alongside. Breakfast and brunch bring eggs benedict to the table for earlier visits. The North Shields fish quay is within walking distance of the marina.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the marina setting, with window tables and outside seating overlooking the yachts, and views described as beautiful and stunning. Lunch earns the most praise, with mince and dumplings called flavoursome, and others mentioning avocado toast, muffins taken home, and coffee with cake. Close behind is the staff, described as lovely and helpful, including during a group booking after a family funeral, where one reviewer recommends booking for larger groups because it gets very busy. The decor also earns credit for its seafaring references. Two reviewers are sharply critical of the food. One found a sandwich soggy and falling to bits, and Southern fried chicken so tough it was hard to chew, from a menu called limited. A brunch group received poached eggs on only partly toasted bread that did not look like sourdough, and eggs benedict called cold, dry and tasteless. One regular wished for later evening opening, and one dog owner got doggie latte art on a latte.

“Definitely the WORST meal I have EVER had in a Restaurant in the North East Of England, probably the WORST I have EVER had in a Restaurant in the United Kingdom & possibly the WORST I have EVER had in the WORLD after traveling frequently, extensively, globally for over 40 years. I very much look forward to having meals with my mother & siblings when I visit the UK. This restaurant was absolutely AWESOME 🤩 the last time we went back in October of 2025. It had an extensive, varied, diverse & GREAT tasting menu. I had a Thai flavored Seafood Stew last October. My family members all had GREAT tasting meals too! We thoroughly enjoyed it. We went for lunch today…..WHAT A CONTRAST!!!! ABSOLUTELY “TERRIBLE” & that is putting it very mildly. It was disgusting & we all ended up leaving most of the meal because it was near inedible. My mother & sister had a sandwich, which was soggy & fell to bits. My mother said it was tasteless. From a very “BORING” & limited menu today, which is the other end of the spectrum to the fantastic menu last October/November, I ended up choosing the “so called” Southern Fried Chicken with loaded French Fried potatoes. I could hardly get my teeth through the chicken, it was so rock hard. My sister tried some & was the same. She was SHOCKED how tough it was. When we were buzzed with loads of blue bottle flies as soon as we sat down & NOTHING really appealed to ANY of us on the menu, we should have really just paid for the two cups of tea that had been ordered, excused ourselves, left & went somewhere else. There is PLENTY of nice restaurants in the local area, but we had all been looking forward to a meal at “The Lock” again. We were all VERY DISAPPOINTED, especially myself when I look forward so much to these infrequent meals with my family, when I reside in Southern California USA & only get across to the UK once per year if I can to visit. We will NEVER go to this restaurant again. You win some, you lose some….We lost BIG STYLE this time & I wasted £25 total for this DISGUSTING, AWFUL meal! I would recommend TOTALLY avoiding this place now. The management, chefs & staff are sadly lacking in all aspects of providing a good service & food! It is an AMAZING place for a venue completely wasted now with this recent change in regime. I have awarded One star throughout in this review, but it would be ZERO stars if I was allowed to award ZERO stars. One star is TOO GENEROUS! I would say STAY AWAY & even go to a supermarket cafe instead. You will get a much better meal, better service & better value!”

“We came for lunch and having booked, were delighted to have a window table overlooking the marina. I opted for mince and dumplings and was delighted with my choice. The food was so flavoursome. The decor was great, with lots of seafaring references. We will definitely return.”

“Went for brunch with the girls, 9 of us. I ordered poached eggs on toasted sourdough. Only one slice was toasted. I think they may have attempted to toast the others but it didn't work out well! Plus it didn't look like sourdough to me (more like thick slices from a farmhouse loaf) and my friend sitting next to me asked if my fried eggs we're nice (yep! I DID order poached). I would have complained but being in company I didn't want to show myself up. My friend sitting next to me had eggs benedict and she said it was cold, dry and tasteless. My friend sitting opposite had avocado with eggs on sourdough and she also said it wasn't that great. So, don't think we'll be going back!”

“Visit here regularly on the bike, a good rideout to a local place to relax and take it easy. Service is always spot on, decent guys 👌 Food is always cracking too, I usually get a coffee and a slice of cake, had breakfast there a few times and that was on point too. Would recommend visiting 👌👌👌”
