  “Visited my Dad in South Sheilds this weekend and decided to call in to the highly recommended Colman's restaurant yesterday. It certainly did not disappoint. Friendly, quick service despite being very busy. We ordered a cod and haddock meal, with chips, mushy peas and a hot drink. The meals arrived quickly, the portions were large (too much for us to finish) and the fish was so fresh with a light crispy batter - delicious.”

  “We visited after a recommendation from a friend to try their fish and chips. Before ordering, we asked the staff if they used separate fryers for the fish and the chips. They kindly informed us that everything—including fish, chips, and sausages—is cooked in the same oil. ​While this means the food isn't suitable for strict vegetarian, pescetarian, or halal diets due to cross-contamination, we deeply appreciated the staff's honesty and amazing customer service. Unfortunately, we had to eat elsewhere, but we highly commend the team for their integrity!”

  “The hype for the best Fish & Chips - it's real. I understand it better, now that I have commenced on a rampage of finding the best chippy around. For now, I'd vote for Colmans! With my very limited knowledge on this subject, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience in Colmans soooooo much that I had to bring my whole church family to South Shields just to indulge and feast. It was a treat to see some of them (especially a medical student from Uganda), experience authentic Fish & Chips at the coast for the first time! Am I for cod or for hake? Both are lovely, but once I tried the Lemon sole, I could never turn back. Soft, thin and just extremely crunchy with the perfect crispy batter.. Ahhh… You can't order the lemon sole in Colmans takeaway - you've gotta dine in. And the dine-in experience is the real deal. Most of our group ordered the lemon sole too; and every one loved every bit of it! Couple it with Colmans very own mushy peas and their homemade Tartare sauce (oooof, the pickles & gherkins in it.. Really good stuff). End the meal with a lovely Affogato 😀”

  “First time in Coleman’s. Not disappointed. For a sit down fish and chips it was actually not much more than more than our takeaway in Newcastle! Staff are attentive, £20 for a fish, chips, peas and a tea. Wife had a pensioners special @ £10.95. Very busy but not packed in. Plenty of space between tables.”

  “We finally made it to this iconic South Shields Fish & Chips establishment and it pretty much hit the mark. This main outpost was nicely decorated inside with modern marine decor and lots of old time photos and memorabilia on the walls, it was also very clean and well organized. Let me start with their bread and butter dish, their cod fish fry, crispy and nicely battered fresh and flaky cod fish filet, among the best that I have had, my only complaint would be that it was a little bit oily and the piece could have been let to dry out a little more. We also tried their fried langoustine shrimp plate, which wasn’t bad but the shrimp was overwhelmed by the batter. Both dishes came with excellent double fried chips which were a perfect accompaniment to the fried plates, smashed peas were also sensacional. When in the mood for a good fish and chips you can’t go wrong with Colmans.”

  “This is another late review. Absolutely 100% recommend Coleman’s .. The food was lovely .. perfectly cooked Fish n chips ..excellent portion size fills the plate .. Forget the rest and give them a try. Restaurant a little dated but adds to its charm . 49 mile round trip but totally worth the drive .”

  “Best fish and chips in town. Beautiful fresh fish with light batter. Freshly cooked chips that are crispy not soggy. Portions are very generous (can definitely share a portion of chips). The batter on both the scampi and the sausage are light, not heavy and not at all greasy. There is a takeaway attached to the restaurant serving the same classics, same quality and taste. Perfect for a summers day or a cold winters night.”
