About 31 The Quay
31 The Quay is a modern British restaurant at Smiths Dock in North Shields, looking out over the River Tyne. It opened on 21 June 2019 with Andrew Wilkinson heading the kitchen, and the dining room seats 80. The cooking follows a British approach built on seasonal produce, and the menu is set monthly, with a four-course special in November and a prix fixe Sunday dinner. Focaccia is served as nibbles or a starter, including a rosemary and sea salt version with wild garlic and fine herb butter. The kitchen advises on adjusting dishes for dairy intolerance and other allergies. Reservations are taken, including for groups of more than 20.

Customer Review Summary
The monthly set menu draws the most praise, with diners describing a four course November menu and a Sunday prix fixe as good value and generous in portion. Among the dishes named, the rosemary and sea salt focaccia with wild garlic and fine herb butter is singled out by more than one diner, one calling the focaccia nibbles soft and fluffy. Others name a melted onion tart with truffled mascarpone, the Pithivier main, and a fillet of bass with prawn, basil and ginger bisque and hand rolled pasta. Reviewers also mention the riverside setting looking out on the Tyne, and staff they call friendly, welcoming and attentive without being intrusive. One reviewer found the dishes almost too big, leaving no room for dessert. Two reviewers describe the kitchen handling a dairy intolerance and allergy sensitivities, with one noting it advised which dishes could be modified.

“We went on the recommendation from a friend who goes a lot. We weren't disappointed. Everything about the place is amazing! Absolutely delicious food, lovely attentive staff and fabulous setting by the river. We are not local to the area but visit our friend regularly so we will definitely be back soon. Highly recommended.”

“Love this place! Great food and warm service in a lovely setting looking out on the Tyne. The rosemary & sea salt focaccia with wild garlic and fine herb butter was delicious, as was the melted onion tart, with truffled mascarpone. My main dish was the Fillet of Bass with Prawn, Basil & Ginger Bisque, Hand Rolled Pasta. Absolutely loved it. Highly recommend.”
