About New China Garden

New China Garden is a restaurant in Newton Abbot, at 137 Queen St, where Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese dishes share one extensive menu. That range lets a table mix cuisines in a single order. Chow mein comes in house special and mixed versions, and the House Special Chow Mein is made with king prawns. Thai green curry and BBQ ribs sit alongside, while crispy chicken with curry sauce and sesame prawn toast cover the lighter plates. Chips and a chip butty are also on the list. The restaurant opens evenings only and is closed on Tuesdays. Orders can be placed through the website or by phone.

Customer Review Summary

House Special Chow Mein draws the most complaints. Two reviewers describe only two king prawns that were slimy and overcooked, and a third found a mixed chow mein with all the noodles on the bottom and everything else on top, not even in the same sauce. A Thai green curry was called gloopy and overpowering with spice, over tasteless vegetables and chicken, and a curry sauce was said to taste like one made from a supermarket jar. Delivery is a close second. Reviewers report orders arriving very late or not at all, a driver who refused to take back food left on a doorstep, and staff who met complaints with attitude or laughed when compensation was requested. Wrong orders recur, including a replacement dish that was also wrong, and one reviewer reports being sent mushroom rice despite an allergy. Others say website complaints did not register and phone calls went unanswered. Positives are thinner. The chips, bbq ribs, and quick, pleasant service earn credit, and one reviewer praised the menu variety, good value, and an early delivery. One diner who found the chow mein inedible made a chip butty from the chips instead.

“Had house chow mein with king prawns, only had 2 prawns in it and they were slimey and over cooked was barely edible first time I've used the Chinese and will not be ordering again , only thing I could eat was the bbq ribs”
  • Carole Dennis
“My meal, a House Special Chow Mein was inedible - 2 King Prawns and what little meat there was, was slimy and the sauce noodles cooked in tasted awful. The chips were nice so ended up having a Chip Butty. Son ate his meal - Crispy Chicken, Sesame Prawn Toast, Curry Sauce ( tasted same as one buys off the supermarket shelf and makes with water - dipped chip in ). Only gave 2* as one meal edible and service quick and pleasant. Wouldn't recommend.”
  • Rachel Groom
“Do not order from their website - glitches, the wrong order arrives and when you try and complain it doesn't register it. Tried to call but couldn't get through. They even managed to send me mushroom rice .... I'm allergic to mushroom so would literally never order it.”
  • Melissa Pearce
“Really enjoyed the food, however would have enjoyed it a lot more if we did not have to wait an hour and a half for it. Food was extremely overpriced, we were lied to about the delivery driver being on their way when they weren’t. When she finally arrived, we were greeted with attitude when expressing our unsatisfaction for the whole situation. And to top it all off, we were laughed at when asking for some sort of compensation due to the inconvenience caused. If you would like on time service, unfortunately this isn’t the place to order from.”
  • Greg Tullett
“Been using this takeaway for a while but the last 6 months or more the food is poor snd often wrong orders and arguing with the owner on the phone I said im not using him again. He said fine but he's a lousy cook and terrible owner. He was already replacing a dish he got wrong so senr another wrong dish tonight. Avoid at all cost. Cheap ingredients and lousy overall”
