  “Afternoon tea - 2 hours very briefly in heaven We had the most wonderful experience at Ugly Butterfly and it was the perfect place to celebrate my birthday. The food and drinks were absolutely outstanding. Every course was beautifully presented, imaginative and, most importantly, delicious. You could really see the thought, creativity and care that had gone into every dish. What made the afternoon particularly special, though, was how personal the whole experience felt. The staff were warm, attentive and genuinely made us feel very welcome. I was incredibly touched to receive a birthday card with my name on it, signed by the whole team — such a thoughtful and personal gesture. The atmosphere was also wonderfully calm and relaxed, allowing us to simply enjoy the afternoon and each other’s company. It was a truly memorable experience from beginning to end, and one we will remember for a long time. A huge thank you to the whole team at Ugly Butterfly. We would absolutely love to return. I need to add the quality of the food and drinks was astoundingly good value for money……”

  “A true dining experience from start to finish. What impressed me most about Ugly Butterfly was how thoughtful the hospitality felt before I had even arrived. Hope, the Reception Manager/Maître d’, contacted me personally by email to confirm the booking, check for allergies and ask about any special occasions. She then welcomed me on arrival, introduced me to the restaurant and its concept, and offered a delicious little welcome drink, tomato and rosemary, if I remember correctly, before showing me to my table. The setting is beautiful, overlooking the Cornish coast from The Headland Hotel, but it was the people who really made the experience. Becky looked after me throughout lunch and was warm, friendly and knowledgeable without ever being pushy. I chose à la carte, and together we effectively created our own tasting menu from the dishes that caught my attention, the signatures and her recommendations. Her recommendation of the venison ravioli was fantastic. The lobster was another highlight, particularly alongside the English rosé recommended by the sommelier, I believe her name was Sue, whose pairing suggestions were absolutely on point throughout. The monkfish was excellent, the stuffed courgette flower was fun and delicious, and then came the strawberry dessert. I had originally been considering the chocolate dessert, but Becky persuaded me towards the strawberry. I’m very glad she did. It was genuinely one of the best desserts I’ve had in a very long time, possibly one of the best full stop. A brilliant way to finish the meal. What stayed with me, though, was the hospitality. Everyone smiled, everyone seemed genuinely happy to help, and even a chef stopped what they were doing to point me towards the restroom when I was clearly heading in the wrong direction. Hope checked in with me again as I was leaving and then sent a personal email the following morning thanking me for visiting. That level of care is increasingly rare. Great food is important, but for me, exceptional service is what turns a meal into an experience. Ugly Butterfly absolutely delivered that. Highly recommended. I’ll remember this one.”

  “Dining here was quite the experience and we had our best dinner in the UK, over many years of eating out, mostly in London so we were very happy to come out this far. Every course was simply perfect. What makes this extra special is that all ingredients are local and in season. We especially loved the use of foraged ingredients. Service was impeccable and we ended up spending most of the summer afternoon in the restaurant and outside on the terrace, where it is possible to order from a simple menu. The restaurant is styled with simple, timeless elegance. The location is stunning with a great panoramic view over the ocean, the beaches and the golf course. We had the fortune to meet Adam Handling in person and after enjoying this meal we turned into big fans.”

  “We went for afternoon tea and it was, by far, the best afternoon tea either of us have ever had. Food, service and location are all absolutely outstanding. Newquay is not short of good places to eat, but I doubt there are many better than this. Highly recommended!!”

  “Celebrated my partner’s bday here (didn’t advertise it) last March. Food was good. Bit disappointed in the scallops (way too many things going on, received a whole speech on how local they were but we then could barely taste them because of everything else on the plate), the rest was nice. Got annnoyed by the server who insisted on chatting and chatting and chatting while the food got cold (just a quick rundown of ingredients is fine thanks). Anyway, food was mostly lovely, waiters were too much and the total cost was through the roof in comparison to similar Michelin starred restaurants in France.”

  “Decided to book here as a surprise for my wife’s birthday on our last day at Newquay. From start to finish the journey we were taken on with so many flavours during the experience. My favourite was the chocolate tart which just made my tastebuds dance. To top the experience off my wife was presented a birthday card where all the staff had signed. To finish they provided a candle desert where she had to make a wish. A beautiful experience. Thanks for making my wife’s birthday so special.”
