About The Cafe At Ridgeway
The Cafe At Ridgeway is a coffee shop on Allt-Yr-Yn Avenue in Newport, set at the top of a hill with views across Newport, the Ridgeway and the Welsh valleys. Dogs are welcome here, and doggy ice cream is available for them. Baristas make the coffee to each customer's preference, and the drinks list also covers teas, hot chocolates including kid-sized ones, and an Ube Matcha drink. Cakes come from Seasons Cakery, with cheesecake among the choices. The food menu adds paninis, a bacon sandwich and nachos. Seating is in booths and pods. The cafe is open daily, and it sometimes closes slightly earlier when the weather turns bad.

Customer Review Summary
Cakes are the main draw, with reviewers singling out the cheesecakes and blondies, plus a well made cake with plenty of choice, though one found the red velvet heavy with too much frosting. Coffee comes close behind, described as better than most, and one reviewer praised it alongside a bacon sandwich while another called the Ube Matcha ridiculously good. Hot chocolates, including kid-sized ones, also earn mentions. Reviewers repeatedly bring up the views over Newport and the Welsh valleys from the top of the hill, often enjoyed from the benches, and the dog friendly welcome, with one noting the dogs are everywhere. Hot food divides opinion. One diner found the paninis dry and tasteless and the nachos a mess with stingy fillings, and another called the sandwich underwhelming next to the cake, while a few praised the panini. Some find the cakes pricey, and one calls the seating area unappealing unless a booth is free. One dog owner left with doggy ice cream as a treat.

“Lovely cafe for a cuppa and something to eat while out for a bit of fresh air. It's right at the top of the hill so there's plenty of views around nearby including the Welsh valleys and Newport City.”

“Super cafe, always come here when we visit Wales. Staff are really lovely (and we are non-locals). Tried the Ube Matcha, it is ridiculously good! Also dog friendly and nice walks nearby :)”

“Handy place to meet up with friends for a catch-up and a brew. Nice views north on the many benches there. The coffee is better than most. The pods were a good idea summer or winter. The cakes look fabulous but you may need to remortgage for regular visits. There is a toilet. You have to really like dogs. They're everywhere.”

“The bacon sandwich and coffee were top notch. Massive fan of the coffee here. Marked down for the red velvet cake which was really heavy and had waaaay too much frosting. Love how dog friendly the place is too, was able to get him some doggy ice cream as a treat.”

“A decent, late opening coffee and cake bar that's very popular with dog walkers and local , (posh-end 😉 Newportonians) A good selection of cakes and pastries and all your favourite coffees and teas. Prices are reasonable considering the area and fine views across ridgeway (AKA little-Switzerland) and Newport”
