Quick info
About The Ram Newark
The Ram Newark is a restaurant in Newark, set in an 18th-century Georgian building at 19 Castle Gate, opposite Newark Castle. The building stands on the site where a coaching inn opened in the 15th century, so the address carries several hundred years of hospitality for travellers and locals who stop to eat, drink and rest. The kitchen cooks dishes such as cod and chips and pork belly, and the team serves at the table. Pork belly is a slow-cook dish, so it takes a while to reach the table. A fireplace gives guests a spot to sit beside while eating or drinking. Dogs are welcome inside, and water bowls are offered.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the food, with the pork belly, cod and chips, and a pork dish with generous portions singled out as delicious, and one table noting everything arrived at the same time. Close behind is friendly, smiling table service, along with the cocktails and a fireplace that reviewers like sitting beside in winter. The location opposite Newark Castle and its convenience before a theatre show also come up. The main complaints concern pacing and the kitchen. Two reviewers mention a long wait for food, though one was told in advance that the pork belly is a slow cook dish. A lower review describes dry chicken, salty bacon cabbage and barely any jus, while a wedding guest found the crisps stale, the vegetarian choice limited and the drinks expensive. One reviewer who sat inside with their dogs was offered water bowls and a treat.

“The waitresses were spoken to by who appeared to be the manager like they were worth nothing, ordered about, no please or thank you. The chicken was dry, the bacon cabbage was salty, the jus was barely existent. The chunky chips were just cooked the ham was mediocre but the fried eggs were nice.”

“What an incredible place. The staff were amazing. We sat inside with the dogs and they were offered water bowls and a treat. The place inside is beautiful and great decor. The food was really tasty and I liked the different options to breakfast. The suggestion the staff made was really a good option. Incredible find!”

“Was at a Small wedding reception here. Food average although Fresh, not much choice for vegetarians. Pork pie/ sausage rolls & quiche all presented on same plate. Cheap Crisps (hard & tasted stale) Chips served in a large Metal Bowl. Beverages expensive. Tea & Coffee available.”

“We visited on Saturday, May 16th, to meet my parents for lunch, and from the moment we walked in, we couldn't have asked for more. Everyone was incredibly friendly and attentive. A special shout-out goes to Erin for making our afternoon so memorable—your service with a smile really brightened our day! The food was incredible, cooked fresh, and served to the whole table at the same time. Erin also made sure our drinks were always topped up. All in all, we spent a wonderful three hours catching up over great food and drinks. The bar itself is clean, modern, and very welcoming. We will definitely be visiting again the next time we're in town!”

“The Ram dates back to the 15th century when a coaching inn opened on the site where the current 18th century, Georgian building now stands. Offering the perfect place for people to meet and rest whilst enjoying great food and wine. The Ram has since been restored to its former, elegant Georgian glory, in the heart of the historic town of Newark, close to Newark Castle.”
