About Black Pool Mill Restaurant
Black Pool Mill Restaurant is a Welsh restaurant in Narberth, set in a Georgian tidal mill built in 1813 to grind flour. The restored building keeps its old mill machinery in place and visible inside. It stands on the banks of the Cleddau river, and a window seat looks out over the water. The restaurant spreads across several floors, with main meals served on one level and afternoon tea on another. The menu runs from breakfast to Sunday lunch and evening meals, and the afternoon tea comes with unlimited self-serve hot drinks. Dogs are welcome, and there is dog ice-cream for them. The gardens and grounds hold an old 18th century bridge, and woodland walks start nearby.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the restored mill itself, where the old machinery is still in place and visitors can see how it worked, set beside the river. Food is the close second draw, described as delicious and reasonably priced, with afternoon tea praised for its unlimited self-serve hot drinks and choice of savoury and sweet items, plus good coffee and a Sunday lunch several want to try. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, polite and helpful. Walkers and dog owners also stop for cold drinks and dog ice-cream in the gardens and by the old bridge. The criticism is about value and attention. One diner found the crab salad small for the money from a limited menu, with no table check and too few staff despite a busy floor. Another was given the wrong drink and left waiting, and one questioned the hummus roll and the separate floors for main meals and afternoon tea. One Christmas Day party was offered champagne as they walked in.

“We discovered the Mill Restaurant after walking down through the forest nearby with the dog. Ideal stop for cold drinks and dog ice-cream on a hot Sunday afternoon. A lot of people doing similar in the beautiful gardens. You can cross the old 18th Century bridge and walk down river along a wide track. The mill interior was impressive restoration of a Tidal Mill. Plenty of parking on site or nearby Forest. Ideal if you want to avoid summer crowds on the beach and the heat.”

“A warm welcome & an excellent afternoon tea. Pram & wheelchair accessible. Well executed afternoon tea, with unlimited self serve hot drinks. Lovely choice of savoury & sweet items, although I would rethink the hummus roll …🤔 the tomato hummus was delicious, but maybe with a few mini crackers or mini breadsticks, definitely not in a roll when there is so many other options. Well maintained Interesting & characteristic building throughout. Not sure why main meals & afternoon teas are on separate floors, but would make for a better atmosphere, especially when quiet to be altogether. Lovely grounds to wander / sit & woodland walks nearby.”

“What a lovely place. Nice setting in the old mill which still has machinery in place. Food was very nice, pity it doesnt open more often.”

“The Restaurant wasnt open as they open Thursday to Sunday. The reason we stopped there was for refreshments and food we brought ourselves. We walked from Narberth through Caneston Woods to get there. Lovely walk. You can park at different car parks for Caneston Woods if you don't want to walk too far. 24,500 in total from start to finish.👌”

“The setting for this restaurant is stunning…the building has been restored and has character. The menu was limited but the Crab Salad sounded delicious as I was looking for a healthy alternative as my friends were all having the afternoon tea. The crab salad arrived and one of my friends asked if it was a starter or a light bite, but I’m one for quality over quantity and at £22 for my lunch, I felt a tad underwhelmed. My first 3 forks of crab found shell and cartilage in, this continued and I think I had 10 ‘bits’ at least. I totally get that it’s a fresh and natural product, which I often choose when eating out, but I have never had this much in one meal. This really did spoil the meal for me but I was with company and as there was NO table check during the meal, I told one of the restaurant team about the issue when the table was cleared of plates. The member if staff said that they would tell the kitchen and that was that. Although there seemed be plenty of staff, there seem to be not enough staff… it’s such a shame because this venue could be so much more…”
