Customer Review Summary

The Salt & Pepper Box divides reviewers most sharply. One diner who collected a takeaway calls the food excellent and also praises the chicken balls, while another who had it delivered calls it inedible. Black bean beef is close behind, really tasty to one diner and overcooked, tough and heavy on chillies to another. Crispy duck splits the same way: a happy hour all you can eat diner liked the aromatic crispy duck, while a set menu diner found it dry and not shredded. Friendly, helpful staff and a chatty waitress earn praise, and one first-time visitor did not need to book. Complaints centre on consistency and delivery. Reviewers mention stale prawn crackers, chips like cardboard, and food that was too salty. One delivery customer reports finding plastic in the food twice, and another says they were ill all night after a prawn dish. In a party of ten, two people got no main course until everyone else had finished. One caller cancelled a delivery after being told the order had not even been started.

“We had a takeaway from here but went and picked it up. The food was excellent, very tasty and cooked perfectly. Would certainly recommend Salt & Pepper Box and the Chicken Balls. The restaurant itself seemed clean but a little tired in decor - if I was back in the area I would certainly be tempted to have a meal here rather than just takeaway.”

“We entered about 6pm, the place was empty of customers, we were seated straight away. We ordered one of the set menus, the satay chicken came with a good amount of sauce, the chicken was so tough we struggled to get it off the skewers and was really hard to chew. When the crispy duck and pancakes came it was so dry and wasn't shredded looked more like it had been put in a mincer or food processor also very little sauce and the cucumber & spring onion was also really dry, it was so bad I only had one. Then came the black bean steak again overcooked and tough and far too many chillies in it, same with the prawn dish overcooked I was ill all night. Seems to me its more of a takeaway with delivery drivers coming and going, also one of them on a mobile phone with speaker on all the time was really annoying. Nearly 8pm and still no customers. Not the Honey Tree I remember years ago, Never again, what a waste of 50 odd quid on my birthday. By the way the Gents toilets were a disgrace, good job I didn't have to sit down as I would have ended up on the floor with the seat!”
