Customer Review Summary

Chips draw the most mentions, with several diners calling them homemade and great, alongside dishes like the vegan shepherd's pie, faggots and chips, and a half and half Chinese chicken curry with chips and rice. Close behind are starters of breaded mushrooms and fried squid, plus beef lasagne, the signature burger and garlic bread with a crispy crust. Reviewers describe a cosy pub with an open log fire, friendly staff, local beers, a pub quiz, and food that arrives quickly. The fries are the recurring weak spot. One reviewer found them soft, soaked in grease and tasting of old oil, served without salt or ketchup, and says the waitress simply pointed at a condiment table when asked. That reviewer also described the staff as uninterested, though the beer was a positive. Another diner said the fries didn't live up to an otherwise delicious meal. That same diner, running late, had the reservation moved and the last available table held.

“I go to the Red Cow every week for the pub quiz. The pub is cosy and Darren is a great host. The homemade chips are highly recommended. If you're in the area, make a point of popping in to say hello. You'll get a very warm welcome.”

“Very disappointing experience - good we didn’t order regular meal here, as I see not only us had bad experience with food… The fries were honestly some of the worst I’ve ever had. They were served without salt, ketchup, sauces, or any other condiments, and nobody mentioned that we’d have to help ourselves. We had to go back inside to ask for salt and ketchup, and the waitress simply pointed at a table with the condiments without saying a word. The fries themselves were soft, falling apart, and completely soaked in grease. The oil tasted old and overused rather than fresh, which made them unpleasant to eat. They certainly didn’t look or taste freshly prepared. The only positive was the beer. Unfortunately, the service matched the food. The staff seemed completely uninterested and gave the impression that serving customers was an inconvenience. Overall, I can’t recommend this place and wouldn’t return.”

“We were running a little late, but after letting the staff know, they were more than happy to move our reservation. They even held the last available table for us, which we really appreciated. The service was friendly throughout, and there was an excellent selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. For starters, we had the breaded mushrooms and fried squid, and both were delicious. The beef lasagne was full of flavour, and the signature burger was just as good. The garlic bread was perfectly soft on the inside with a lovely crispy crust. The only downside was the fries, which unfortunately didn't live up to the rest of the meal. The food was served incredibly quickly, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. Overall, we had a great meal and would definitely recommend a visit! 👌”

“Lovely 300 year old pub which has bucketloads of charm and a wonderful atmosphere. I booked a table for 4 and there was plenty of parking when we arrived at noon on a weekday. The staff were very attentive as my Mam in Law was in a wheelchair, and my Dad in Law had a rollator. The pub was busy but we were well cared for and everyone, including the people who helped with the wheelchair, were great. The meals were also delicious and we didn't have to wait very long for them. It was our first time but we would definitely visit this pub again, and will recommend it to friends.”
