About The Flour and Flagon

At 126 Grosvenor St in Manchester, The Flour and Flagon is a nightclub and pub with a club area at the back. The events calendar includes music bingo, a quiz night and open mic, so the bar fills with organised entertainment as well as drinking. Pool tables and darts cover the games, and pool cues are held at the bar against ID as a deposit. Sport plays on the TV. The venue does not serve food, so groups can bring in their own from elsewhere. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers split sharply over the bar staff, the most discussed topic here. Several describe friendly, patient bartenders, and one says the bar team happily let them bring in food from elsewhere. The named activities are pool, darts, sport on the television, a quiz night and music bingo, which one regular joins most Saturdays after football. One visitor became a fan of the Strongbow cider on a quiet Tuesday afternoon, and another notes it is dog friendly with a club in the back. The complaints are as specific as the praise. Several reviewers call the staff or manager rude, and a long-time regular describes a new staff member as aggressive over pool cues left against an ID deposit. Two mention price rises under new management, one calling it expensive for a student bar. One quiz attendee says a bartender kept pushing doubles after repeated refusals and then poured them anyway. Another says a manager let a Guinness sit and gave a sharp reply when asked to top it up because of a gig across the road.

“UPDATED 01.06.2026 I went to see a gig at the Deaf Institute on Sunday 26th April at 7pm and was going to call in. But you were shut, all lights off, but your opening hours said you were open on Sundays. Was just querying if you was still open because I regularly go to the Deaf Institute and wanted to call before. Don't know why all the ???? --- Closed tonight, has it shut down? Can't find anything online.”

“Extremely rude staff. Made me feel uncomfortable being here. I would not recommend here to anybody. Sticky floors, flies everywhere, and unclean toilets. Also expensive for a student bar. Should avoid”

“Manager was so rude, brought 20+ people in before a gig across the road and when I ordered a Guinness, I explained I was in a rush , she let it sit as normal… I asked as it’d settled for a while, could she top it up as I said I was in a rush, she explained she was training someone… I said that’s fine sorry if I came across as an arse, she said you did and I explained I wasn’t being rude I was just short of time, I got a mouth full…. Should not be customer facing, just a very rude aggressive woman. Never going in again Loved the response 😆 my point was a wasn’t being an arse, she purposely left me waiting because I said I was in a bit of a rush… she wasn’t training anyone with our drinks, just general training and she wasn’t rude because she could be. Think you’ve over empowered your staff …. Not great reviews lately”

“I’ve been coming here every Saturday for the past four years after playing football with friends. We regularly stay for drinks, play pool, and join the music bingo. We’ve always had a good experience — until last Saturday. A new staff member treated me in a completely unacceptable and aggressive manner. I had left my ID at the bar as a deposit for the pool cues. While calmly waiting for my turn, she suddenly snatched the cue out of my hands without any warning and spoke to me in a hostile, confrontational way. There was clearly a misunderstanding between staff, as another employee appeared moments later with my ID. Despite this, her behaviour escalated — she threw my driving licence onto the pool table, continued being aggressive, and when I tried to speak to someone in charge, she physically pushed me and shouted at me to leave and kept yelling “I am the boss”. This is not just poor service — it is completely disrespectful and unacceptable behaviour. No customer should be treated this way under any circumstances. We have been loyal customers for years, but this experience left all of us shocked and uncomfortable. Management seriously needs to address this.”

“A lot of reviews seem to talk about poor/rude service. I don't know about the management, but the girls behind the bar couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. They don't serve food but were more than happy for me to bring in food from elsewhere. Would definitely return next time I'm in the area.”
