About Maki & Ramen

Maki & Ramen is a Japanese restaurant in Manchester, at 11 York St, with more than 15 years in business. Its ramen starts with a broth cooked for 8 hours and noodles made in house, so the bowls rest on both. The black garlic tonkotsu ramen is one of the orders, and a vegan garlic tonkotsu ramen is available too. Sushi sits alongside the noodles, with rainbow rolls on the menu for anyone who wants rolls instead of a bowl. The restaurant is walk-in, with no booking posture beyond turning up. A cocktail list rounds out the drinks.

Customer Review Summary

Ramen is the draw, with reviewers praising the black garlic tonkotsu and classic tonkotsu as full of flavour and generously portioned. One diner calls the steak tataki ramen a favourite, and another found the vegan garlic tonkotsu did not feel shortchanged. Close behind are the takoyaki and the gyoza, which one diner calls the best they have had, and the tan tan noodles get a mention too. Staff are described as friendly and welcoming, and several call the prices reasonable. The sushi draws a more mixed response. The black dragon roll was just "good", and one diner found the rainbow rolls thin, small and not very fresh, alongside cold, tough, dry fried chicken and a ramen portion they considered small. Other notes include noodles going soggy as they sit in the broth, tables too small for several dishes, and music louder than one party wanted. One reviewer suggests booking a table. Another recalls the bell banged whenever a customer arrived, and staff bringing an allergy list book after an egg allergy was mentioned.

“The steak tataki ramen is my favourite item on their menu! I always get it! Must try, it’s absolutely divine! Everything else is wonderful also but that particular ramen is superb! Thank you Jazmin S for the great service!!”

“Really nice food and excellent service. Our only complaint would be the tables are very small and it can be difficult if you have ordered multiple dishes! The prices are reasonable. Will definitely be visiting again.”

“Good flavours, but not quite the kind of meal that makes you start planning your next visit on the way out. We ordered the tonkatsu ramen with black garlic oil, chicken yakisoba, tempura and takoyaki. Everything tasted good and the ramen had a satisfying, rich flavour, but the overall meal felt a little heavy by the end. The service was fine, although it lacked a bit of pace and warmth. Nothing was bad, and there is clearly good food coming out of the kitchen. It just did not fully win us over. The music was also louder than we would have liked, which made conversation harder than it needed to be. A decent option when you want something comforting and filling, but for us it was more “pleasant” than memorable.”
